The Chicopee National Guard was established on December 12, 1861, when the Massachusetts Militia was called into service to suppress a civil insurrection in that town. The first members of the Chicopee National Guard were men from six towns in central Massachusetts: Northampton, Holyoke, Winchester, Amherst, Wellesley, and Easton. The unit was originally raised for three years and then disbanded. On November 22nd, 1864, the General Court of Massachusetts passed an act providing for the organization of a national guard battalion in Chicopee. The battalion was organized on December 12th and began duty on January 1st 1865. It increased its strength rapidly and by February 20th had reached 28 officers and 100 enlisted men. In 1865-1866 the army engaged in a campaign against Confederate forces at Monmouth Junction. A large part of Chicopee garrison participated in this engagement; however many soldiers left to join other units during trench warfare over several days. On May 9th 1865 General John McClernand ordered all federal troops out of Boston after rioting broke out among federal workers following successful execution of a soldier who had been caught stealing food from local stores

The first regiment of the National Guard was organized on April 14, 1777 in Philadelphia. On September 12, 1780, George Washington ordered all state militias to be mobilized for two years under the command of General Nicholas Fenton. The Continental Congress passed a resolution on October 15th requiring that each state provide one hundred guardsmen for service “during this time” however only thirteen states did so by December 1st,1780. Massachusetts failed to meet their obligation and Rhode Island also failed to do so. Connecticut did fulfill their part byproviding six guardsmen but no money was given for them to arm and train them. This lack of support may have been due to fear of British Invasion or because American military commanders were unsure how to use these new soldiers effectively In 1781, the Continental Congress passed an act providing for the organization and arming of companies of militia from each colony with thirty rounds per soldier and four days per week drill . These companies were mustered into service on November 16th . By February 10th, 1782 there were over one thousand volunteer guardsmen barracks across America during the Revolutionary War much change took place with many officers being discharged or sold out during the war while other officers received promotions like John Adams who became First President of United States after victory over Great Britain

Chicopee is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts and it has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three hundred years. After English settlers arrived in 1650, they built a sawmill and founded Chicopee Parish. In 1753, Captain John Winthrop led his men from MA to build a tiny settlement on the south shore of what would become Chicopee Harbor. On January 6th of that year, Governor Thomas Hutchinson granted land to Captain John Winthrop in exchange for wampum beads and other goods. This small community became the nucleus around which Chicopee grew over time. By 1836, when Boston extended its boundaries to include Hampden County, Chicopee had already grown into a thriving commercial center with brick buildings and two churches. In 1857-58 during the height of slavery in America, African Americans were banned from entering Chicopee without special permission from their white owners and so they started working off-the-grid farms near by to survive
Chicopee was first settled in 1630 and became a town in 1792. It was originally known as "Wilton" after the Earl of Wilton, who donated land for the town. Chicopee was renamed to Chicopee in 1825. The town had a population of around 5,000 people by 1871. In 1870, Chicopee voters passed a resolution approving the creation of a public library and pension system for local government employees.
