Haverhill, Massachusetts is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Haverhill is the smallest incorporated municipality in Essex County and the second-smallest municipality in Massachusetts. It lies on the border of Boston and Somerville and is bordered by Lowell to the east, Cambridge to the south and west, Newton to the north, and Quincy to the northwest. The town was first settled in 1630 as Haverhill Plantation by English Puritans led by John Winthrop. The name derived from "Havertoun," an old Celtic word meaning "place where wheat grows." For many years it was one of two communities within Boston that did not have their own school district; until 1875 public schools were provided only for residents ofBoston proper. In 1915 Haverhill voted to become its own municipality. The town has a rich history dating back to before its incorporation as a village in 1792. The first settler in what would eventually be called Haverhill was Captain John Smith who arrived with his family from England circa 1630 AD. He built a house on what is now Main Street just beyond present day State Road 1108 which still stands today as part of downtown Haverhill (although it has been abandoned for many years). From here he started trading goods with other villages along this stretch of road including Salem whose settlers had also followed Captain Smith's advice about trading for goods down river instead of traveling inland because they knew there were no wild animals or dangerous plants living near them! In fact so safe were these villagers' surroundings that when Governor John Winthrop came into Boston in 1636 looking for new land to establish his government on behalf of New Englanders he decided against moving further inland because he didn't want any more friendly villages close by! This decision set off a series of events that would result in much later development around this area – most notably becoming one of America's earliest suburbs! By 1800 there had already grown up on what would eventually become Haverhill over 1500 people making this small community one of almost 9000 residents located within city limits today! It wasn't until 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 10368 which ordered all white males between 21 and 45 years old across America must move out Eastward into open spaceagues areas such as Rhode Island etc., beginning mass migration known as The Great Migration - thus starting what would soon be known as American suburbia!!! Despite being smaller than some neighboring municipalities, Haverill has long been able to maintain vibrant retail culture due its close proximity to both downtown Boston and Somerville businesses respectively. Although commercial growth slowed during the economic recession early 2009-2010 however recent projects like Home Depot moved permanently into town hall Plaza leaving behind an even more vibrant shopping district complete with multiple high end restaurants/bars/cafes etc., providing hope for future growth! Town officials are currently hard at work planning 2020's master plan which will include additional housing developments along with larger parkland plans focusing attention towards education opportunities for young people living within walking distance or bike riding distance form downtown!!

The town was founded by Puritans in 1636 and grew rapidly due to its natural resources, including coal, iron ore, and lumber. Haverhill became a small town with a population of around 1,000 people by 1800. However, it started to grow rapidly again during the 18th century as more and more people moved into the area. In 1775, Haverhill voted to become an independent township. This caused some friction with neighboring towns as they wanted their own restrictions on what type of commerce could be conducted within their limits. However, this eventually led to cooperation between the two towns when it came time for them to fight against British forces during the American Revolution. When war arrived in America, Haverhill sided with the Americans and helped lead its forces against British troops. After the Revolution ended in 1783, most of Haverhill's residents fled to other parts of New England or left for Canada because of economic reasons. Some stayed behind and formed what is now known as The Huntington Society which remains an important organization today. During Reconstruction following World War II (1939-1945), many new residents came into Haverill and contributed to its growth once again. Many businesses were opened up thanks to this influx of new people and money; these included car dealerships and restaurants along with housing developments such as Riverside Place."
