The Militia Act of 1838 required all males over 21 years old to register with the government and attend military drills. In 1861, when Kentucky became Confederate territory, many people in Massachusetts began to worry about how this would affect their state’s defenses. This led to creation of another unit within the Holyoke National Guard called Company K (First Regiment) Confederate Volunteers. Many residents in Holyoke were worried about what would happen if war broke out and they didn’t have access to their own militia force. The company was first stationed at Northampton before being moved to Springfield in 1863. During World War I, theHolyoke National Guard played an important role in support of American troops abroad. In 1917-1918, it mobilized for six months for service on overseas battlefields including participation in Battle of Tannenberg on July 14th 1918 which saw heavy losses for both sides; however, most soldiers emerged from this conflict unharmed thanks largely to timely medical treatment received by members of local militias lining up behind enemy lines at Lenzinghof Ridge near Minsk
