Leominster, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,993 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Leominster Castle in Lincolnshire, England. It was first settled by English settlers in 1641. The first recorded meeting of the townsfolk took place on September 20th of that year. In 1784, the town voted to annex part of neighbouring Woburn and create a new borough with the same name. In 1827, voters declined to rejoin Plymouth County; they instead formed a new township called Northborough which still exists today as a separate municipality. In 1892-93, Leominster amalgamated with neighboring Woburn to form one large city with its own government and police force under one mayor and six-member board of commissioners. Leominster is located about 15 miles (24 km) south-southwest of New Bedford and 25 miles (40 km) east of Boston proper. According to the US Census Bureau, it has a total area of 21 square miles (55 km2). The central business district contains many stores and restaurants as well as two high schools – Northborough High School and Leominster Senior High School – while most peripheral areas have smaller businesses or no businesses at all. There are several parks within walking distance including Lake Winnipesaukee Resort Park which includes an artificial lake used for swimming/water sports; Easton Park which has playgrounds/theater/badminton courts; Pioneer Valley Recreation Center which provides various activities for children including basketball; City Hall which houses municipal offices & court facilities as well as library services; and several churches located throughout the town center with multiple congregations serving different denominations including Roman Catholic (St Peter’s Parish), Baptist (First Baptist Church), Methodist (Methodist Church), Congregationalist (Congregationalist Church), Lutheran (LutheranChurch Minneapolis congregation), Presbyterian (Presbyterian church in Springfield MA), Unitarian Universalist(Universalist Association) & Iglesia ni Cristo de la Plata(Iglesia Ni Cristo de la Plata). On December 17, 1692, the town of Leominster became the first in New England to be granted a charter by the Plymouth Colony. The town wascreated on the banks of the Penobscot River and its original name was "Newbury." It is said that when Captain John Smith first saw Leominster he thought it looked like a small town on his map. In 1697, English explorer and missionary George Monck came through Leominster while exploring the area for a new route to America. He recommended that the colony give this area to Leominster because it had a good harbor with plenty of land available for farming and trade.
