Pittsfield is the smallest of the seven towns in Plymouth County and its only full-time municipality. The town was chartered as a village on December 12, 1647, by General John Winthrop. The original name for Pittsfield was "Plymouth Plantation". In 1793, after much deliberation over which town should be named for Colonel George Washington's father-in-law (John Adams), Pittsfield was chosen and became known as "George Washington Town". The first mill in Pittsfield was built by Nicholas Mansbridge in 1795; it operated until 1810. A second mill followed in 1811; it also ceased operation until 1880. One of the earliest stores in what is now Pittsfield was established at 13 N Main Street by Samuel Wheeler Jr., metaphorically called "the Gateside Store", on July 1, 1792; it remained open until 1865. Another store opened at 208 E Market Street on November 10, 1812; this store closed around 1860 due to competition from larger shops near Harvard University that had moved into the downtown area since that time. A post office opened at 111 Elm Street on October 26th, 1813; it continued service until 1888 when mail delivery through Bangor ended due to lack of space within the new mail building across from Commonwealth Bank).
