Quincy, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Quincy is part of the Boston metropolitan area and is the largest town in that area. Quincy is also home to Brigham Young University–Hawaii and the Harvard Business School. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Quincy were Samoset Indians who built a small trading post on an uninhabited island near present-day Quincy Harbor in 1630. In 1635 two Englishmen named John Winthrop and his son Edward met some of these Indians at the same place and decided to stay with them for several months before sailing back across Narragansett Bay and returning to England. In 1638 Englishman Jonas Leach established himself as a trader on the mainland shore of what are now Quincy Harbor, then known as Leach's Plantation. In 1640 he married Mary Estabrook, daughter of Samuel Estabrook of Lancasterburgh (now Lancaster). The couple foundedLeach's Colony which became one of the most successful Puritan settlements in New England during their time period. Nathaniel Beal arrived from England in 1642 with his brother Robert Beal and began trading at Leach's Colony site. He soon developed into one of New England's leading merchants and served as treasurer for both Rhode Island and Massachusetts Bay Colony before becomingGovernor ofMassachusetts Bay Colony in 1728-29; he resigned after being accused of bribery by his successor, Thomas Gage. In early October 1775 British forces stormed Boston posting notices throughout the colony ordering all men to assembled within three days at Fort George if they did not want their lives or property taken away; some men chose instead to march inland towards Lexington where they were met by Patriot forces under General George Washington; many Patriots died while attempting crossings over frozen rivers into Lexington led by Colonel Israel Putnam).
