Taunton is chartered as an independent city in 1803 and became a full-time municipality on July 1, 1898. Taunton's name comes from the Native American word "tun" meaning "place where people gather." The first settler to arrive in what is now Taunton were two men who came overland from England in 1634: Benjamin Page and John Eliot. They built a cabin on the border of present-day Quincy and Holyoke townships. On August 12, 1635, they filed a patent for land adjacent to their current site which included what is now downtown Taunton. In 1720 Timothy Pickering founded a ferry landing here with his family for passengers coming and going between Marblehead and Ipswich (now Quincy). One of Pickering’s sons developed this site into one of the most important commercial areas in central Massachusetts during that time period; he named it “Pickering” after his father. By 1800 there were more than 50 stores here catering to traveler’s needs as well as several taverns serving refreshments along with three inns., including one known today as George Washington Hotel/Biltmore House which served dinner nightly until 1957 when it closed its doors after years of decline due to competition from modern hotels In 1803 Taunton became an independent city under the jurisdiction of Middlesex County On July 1st 1898, following years of planning by Mayor Isidor Siegelman and City Council members David Wasserstrom and Harry Shapiro – bothof whom had earlier been active organizers behind Worcester's incorporation –Taunton became fully operational as an autonomous city with its own police department One year later on October 15th 1800 residents held their first early morning vote ratifying incorporation into the new community In 1908 corporate headquarters moved out to North Quincy Street within walking distance of all our businesses
