In 1842-43 Woburn experienced a period of severe economic distress due toalist soil erosion from farming operations around Boston University'sTeamsidence Campus (now Fenway Park). As a result of this problem as well as other factors including an embargo on British exports caused by President James K Polk following the Mexican–American War (1846), prices for goods exported from Boston skyrocketed and local businesses went out of business. In 1848-49 some citizens banded together with neighboring communities such as Needham and South Hadley in order to form "The Workingmen's Association", which sought reform within their respective communities through legislation passed by their respective legislatures; this effort failed however because high taxes required by The Association would have doomed many small businesses throughout Northeastern Massachusetts during this time period To prevent furtherwreckingofthetowns finances many members resigned or were forced out after only three years while others chose bankruptcy instead However much later when Sparkman & Silliman opened up shop on Main Street back in 1870 things began changing again for Woburn with new entrepreneurs taking up residence including Boothe Brothers who ran a bakery before becoming city fathers for Worcester That same year saw another turning point when Representative Willard Richards introduced an act into Congress known as the Hatch Act which forbid discrimination against certain groups among Americans based on national origin or ethnicity
