Kalamazoo, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kalamazoo County. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 113,906. The city is located in western Michigan on the southern shore of Lake Huron and is bordered by other municipalities to the north, east, and south including Ann Arbor to the east and west, as well as Clinton Township to the north-south. It became an incorporated town in 1836. The City of Kalamazoo was established on July 1, 1836 when it was reorganized from part of Grand Rapids Township (then known as " Alexandria Township"). At that time it included all present-day Kalamazoo County except for what are now Ann Arbor and Clinton Township which were separate townships at that time. The original site where Kalamazoo now stands was located on what is now Washtenaw Avenue between Spring Street and Ionia Road; Spring Street runs along both sides of the river while Ionia Road runs along its eastern border. The first store built in what is now downtown Kalamazoo was called "The Gilded Cage" because its owner had gold coins melted down for him by General James Kippenberger during his military campaigns in Mexico during 1846-47. This store's unique design featured two stories with gilded Cage doors that opened into an open air market with room for up to 30 people at a time; this market still exists today as One Liberty Plaza (now part of Macy's). This early development may have been helped by General Canby's purchase of land adjacent to present-day downtownKalamazoo in 1847 for $2,000 cash plus 10 acres (4 hectares) worth of timberland – also helping contribute to Downtown's growth over subsequent decades. In 1865 local resident John Cavanaugh donated land off nearby Holland Avenue near current day Elmira Road/Washington Boulevard so that school children could play free accessibly within walking distance until they reached 8 years old; this provided one major impetus behind Downtown's rapid growth thereafter - kids playing outside being able to learn about living costs rather than just money activities! Kalamazoo is a city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 33,883 at the 2010 census. Kalamazoo is the largest city in the Upper Peninsula and one of the ten most populous cities in Michigan. It is also home to Western Michigan University and many small businesses and industrial companies. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Kalamazoo on October 24, 1796 with Lieutenant Colonel John Marshall's detachment of soldiers from New York under Major George Washington Woodward. They named their new town after Sir George Stephenson's successful steamboat trip from London to Detroit that same year. The settlement grew rapidly because of its location on Lake Superior-Bella Coola County became known as "the Great Lakes District." In 1819, Kalamazoo was chosen as site for the first permanent government of North America when Detroit was founded as a result of an agreement between President James K. Polk and Indian Chief Tecumseh during his visit to America that summer. In 1826, Kalamazoo became part of the Indiana Territory when it was organized as part of Indiana Statehood through an act by Representative William Houghton. The town had been designated as a military post because it lay along U.S.–Canadian border at what are now Battle Creek and Gratiot counties. When Territorial Governor Isaac Parker died in office in 1830, his widow selected Kalamazoo to be her interim residence until she could find someone more qualified for the position - but no one applied until Alexander Hamilton nominated banker Nicholas Biddle for governor instead on July 10th, 1830 (Hamilton being then serving as treasury secretary). Biddle served only two months before losing election to Harrison due to fraud accusations brought against him by Senator Levi Morton (D-MI). A referendum held on November 3rd, 1830 approved becoming a state within minutes after ballots were cast at various locations throughout the territory including Fort Wayne (now Indianapolis), Lansing (now Lansing), Mount Pleasant (now Muskegon Heights), and Walled Lake (now White Cloud).
