The Kalamazoo Naval Shipyard is located in downtown Kalamazoo and has been building warships for the United States Navy since 1872. The yard was designed by American military engineers who were investigating methods ofbuilding ships that could be sailed instead of having them built at shipyards on the East Coast. The first ship built at the Naval Shipyard in Kalamazoo was the USS Constitution, which was launched on July 14th, 1797. Kalamazoo, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the largest municipality in the Grand Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 556,744 as of 2010, making it the 11th most populous city in Michigan and the 24th largest city in United States. Kalamazoo is also one of two cities to be included in the Detroit-Windsor-ioxon Combined Statistical Area, which has a population of 917,631 as of 2010. The first settlers to what is now Kalamazoo were French traders who arrived in 1701. They named their settlement "Platteville." The first permanent settler was Nicholas de Grasse, captain of a ship called La Belle Equipe, who arrived on July 8, 1701. He built a trading post at what is now Gratiot Avenue and Home Street near present-day downtown Kalamazoo. In 1713 de Grasse married Marie Parenteau from Rouen, France and moved his family to what is now Muskegon Heights east of town on land granted by Governor John McLaughlin for that purpose. By 1715 he had erected a small frame house at First National Bank headquarters on Elm Street (now Muskegon Avenue). In 1805 John Atherton founded Cadillac Academy (now Wayne State University) after traveling through Canada looking for land for his ill father-in-law Moses Atherton II (). This became one of the first private universities west of the Appalachian Mountains when it opened its doors October 1st 1805 with 30 students enrolled from Ohio and Indiana under Revd Samuel Morse (1803–1872), an American Presbyterian missionary who had come to preach among Native Americans living along Lake Huron's eastern shoreline near Sault Ste Marie.[1] The cornerstone for nearbyrich Upper Peninsula's only brick courthouse was laid on October 14th 1827 by Joshua Cook with assistance from Bishop Augustus Hickey[2], Sr., founder and first bishop of Detroit metro area ordained January 6th 1830[3]. Judge Augustus Hickey celebrated mass there December 10th 1827 followed by groundbreaking ceremonies February 16th 1830 with local architects James Wilkinson (Mayflower) & Benjamin Latimer leading[4]. The building served as court square until 1904 when it burned down during prohibition enforcement operations inside then new Detroit Public Library building; replaced thereafter by former Masonic Temple located between Woodward Avenue NW and gristmill Road NE cornering First NationalBank Building site! Kalamazoo was founded in 1837 by Nimrod Cline and others as the town of Kalamazoo, Michigan. It became a city in 1907 and is the county seat of Waushara County. The city is located on the east side of the Kalamazoo River, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Detroit. The population was 107,731 in 2010. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Michigan were French Catholics who moved from Marquette, Minnesota in 1835. They named their new land Saint Ignace afterIgnatius Loyola, the patron saint of France. French traders and explorers followed in the 1840s and discovered rich deposits of copper and gold near present-day Lansing and other parts of Michigan Territory. This led to an influx of immigrants during the late 19th century: Germans, Irishmen, Italians, Poles, Lithuanians, Russians etc., many coming to work on large mines that were opening up throughout Michigan Territory. In 1847–48 there was a stampede by German miners known as "the Great Migration" across the Niagara River into Ontario – one reason whyMichigan's earliest official name was not "Michigan." In 1849 Kalamazoo organized as a town under Act No 992 (1849), which granted township status to any place with 5 or more inhabitants over age 20 who had paid $100 per year quitrent for three years immediately before incorporation; this privilege continued until 1870 when it was replaced by village status for towns with fewer than 10 residents but no less than $100 per year quitrent for such a period as four years instead). At first Kalkazoo used its own currency – gold pieces struck at Sandwich Mines – though silver dollars soon became available from New York City merchants. paper money began being printed locally beginning in 1865 (see history of currencies). The early 1860s saw rapid growth due to transportation improvements made by John Dibblet Jr.—one early investor—and others associated with his company Dibblet & Co., including Wm Dearborn (later Ford), whose brother Marcus built Dearborn Streetcar Company later that decade; this allowed passengers traveling between Detroit and Flint to bypass Kalamazoo on their way home without having to buy tickets at either stop!
