The Monroe National Guard is one of the oldest and most powerful military organizations in America. It was founded on July 4, 1812 by General containing Pontiac as its first commander. The militia has played an important role in American history, including fighting in the Mexican-American War (1846-48), the Civil War (1861-65), World War II (1939-45), and the Korean War (1950-53). Monroe was originally part of Michigan Territory. On November 16, 1836, it became a state of the United States. The National Guard furnished approximately 25% of all Michigan’sTroops during World Wars I and II. In 1991, Michigan passed a law allowing for membership in state militias by individuals who meet certain qualifications such as being a resident of Monroe or having family living there at least five years previous to enrolling. Today, statewide membership is open to anyone who qualifies under state law. Today’s Monroe National Guard is made up from units from throughout the State of Michigan. Unit insignia vary depending on subunit affiliation but typically include a badge or patch with the unit name/ motto and troop number(s) associated therewith; as well as individual unit Colors/Logo's if any exist within that particular subunit Inmunity associations are common within both state and federal militaries across many countries due to their shared history and traditions between different branches of service memberdom

The area that would become Monroe was first settled in 1812 by French traders as part of L'Islet de la Motte-Jacques Settlement. Today Monroe continues to be an important commercial center for southeastern Michigan thanks to its location on lake Huron between Detroit and Ottawa; its large concentration of heavy industry including automotive manufacturing; its location within easy commuting distance from both Lansing and Ann Arbor; and its strong presence in educationally prestigious schools such as Wayne State University (Lansing) and Michigan State University (East Lansing).
