The Pontiac Army Museum is a museum located in the city of Pontiac, Michigan that displays military artifacts from the United States and other countries. The museum was founded in 1984 by then- Mayor Charles Schaefer and current Mayor Mike Duggan. The museum is open to the public every day except Christmas Day. The first collection at the museum was donated by Jerry Pratt, who worked for General Motors at their Pontiac plant. The next donation came from former Army lieutenant general Floyd Ritchie, who had served as assistant commandant of schools for U.S. Army Military Academy at West Point. In 1992, the city of Pontiac passed a resolution authorizing the foundation to start displaying military artifacts from all over the state of Michigan in its downtown area. This led to donations from towns such as Battle Creek, Flint, Orion Township, Hollandale, Marshfield and many more. In 2007, an addition to the museum was added when it was announced that a new $23 million facility would be built adjacent to downtown Pontiac on State Street which would include a visitors center and four theaters used for army movies and shows as well as storage facilities for army equipment and memorabilia dating back to World War II. The building opened in September of that year with an event attended by then-President George W Bush and his wife Laura Bush as part of International Military Veterans Day Weekend festivities across Michigan including events in Detroit and Lansing also taking place at that time inside one of these buildings inside what is now known as Ford’s Theatre located on I-275 north just south of Woodward Avenue between Cass Corridor Boulevard (now M-675) east off I-75 exit 134) On November 5th 2008 major renovations were completed with funding provided by foundations using private funds coming from various sources including contributions made online through GoFundMe prior to this event . These changes included adding an exhibition hall measuring 150 feet wide x 50 feet long with 24 foot ceilings providing more space for display cases , additional hangars For storing equipment totaling 16x16 feet each along with renovation/replacement/addition of restrooms as well as exterior painting throughout On Saturday 3rd October 2016 it was announced via social media channels updates will be making available everyday until Tuesday 10th December 2016 during which there will be no exhibitions or events taking place due a planned government shutdown Of The Department Of Defense . All materials remaining in storage are being brought out into view & exposed for viewing . No refunds or replacements will be given so please plan ahead .
