The local Potawatomi people had settled here by 1800; they were forced out by white settlers who began arriving in large numbers following General Nicholas Harkness' 1807 military expedition against numerous Indian tribes along Michilimackinac River watershed - one such expedition led by Major George Armstrong Custer that claimed scalps and Wounded Knee Creek Massacre fame among other accomplishments A new town called Sault Ste Marie was surveyed by Elisha Pelee on September 11th 1824 while surveying future boundaries for his namesake Pelee Island which would later become Ontario County – with help from Ebenezer Beecher who served as surveyor general during US President James Krieger’s administration – after being recommended by then Governor Augustus Gray . Ottawa lawyer Francois Nicolet negotiated title deeds with First Nation leaders Joseph Kahnawake (Cheyenne) , Mikmaq hunter François Gourdon (Nisga'a), Isaac Brock (Guelph), unnamed Cree leader David Thompson (Creek) – all men leading successful expeditions into Upper Peninsula waters looking for mineral resources or hunting grounds during this period – starting on November 1st 1825 when Kahnawake acquired title over 2 square miles extending along present day Grand Boulevard through downtown Sault SteMarie . The village site lay within present day eastern boundary of both Lapeer Township on the west side of Lake Huron opposite Greenfield Township onshore; angling pioneer Daniel White opened a small store there early in 1827 followed soon thereafter by others trading with native populations until 1830 when British forces burned down most indigenous villages along lower St Mary's River due to political instability stirred up by American traders operating in that area at that time following Sir John Franklin's HMS Erebus Expedition exploring northern waters adjacent to contemporary Hudson Bay
