The history of the Sault Ste. Marie Army National Guard begins with World War I. On Dec. 12, 1914, the entire town of Sault Ste. Marie was evacuated for fear of a potential war between Canada and Germany. The city's only military installation became operational on Jan. 1, 1915 when the Territorial Militia Regiment No. 2 was organized from soldiers from other units in the city and its surrounding rural area. In 1917, the regiment was redesignated as the 9th Infantry Regiment (Rifles) and moved to Toronto where it served with distinction in both world wars before being disbanded in 1922 at the conclusion of hostilities. In 1927, however, it reactivated under command of Headquarters Canadian Expeditionary Force (HCF) as part of Second Canadian Infantry Brigade Group which fought in France during World War II against Nazi Germany; later that year it was disbanded again as part of brigade group structure andRegular Army command structure came into effect on Oct 1st 1944 after German capitulation ended World War II). In 1951-1952 armoured car regiment RCAH "The Black Watch" amalgamated with 9th Armoured Car Battalion (Medium) created out of elements thereof absorbed from 2nd Armoured Car Battalion(Heavy)). That same year also saw establishment of 15th Armoured Horse Regiment (Light), which amalgamated with 5th Armoured Horse Battalion effective Jan 1 1957 when Light Division replaced Artillery Division within Regular Army.) On July 25 1948 Queen Elizabeth II signed Order In Council authorizing formation locally specific infantry regiments - 8th Royal Scots Borderers/1st battalion being formed at Sault Ste Marie while 6th Royal Scots Borderers were raised at Traverse City;; concurrently 3rd Battalion Canadian Parachute Regiment was raised at North Bay;; these units would become known as The Guardsmen.) It wasn't until Febuary 1949 that airborne unitRoyal Air Force equipped with American F-86 Sabres began operations localizing here.. Shortly afterwards arrival by C-47 Globemaster transports full equipment for all three battalions including Aircrew School; training program continued until early 1952 when all servicemen mustered out,, unit disbanded effective Sept 24 1953 although some personnel remaining garrisoned at Materiel Command Post until disbanding also…..continues present day members Garrisoned At ECCM 7/25/48: Formation order for locally specific infantry regiments is made; 8 RSCBs @ Sault Ste Marie & 6 RSCBs @ Traverse City

The Army in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan was founded on July 1, 1814 as the first infantry regiment in what would become the United States military. The regiment served until 1846 when it was disbanded due to a lack of volunteers. On November 10, 1898 the army was reactivated and garrisoned at Fort Michilimackinac in Sault Ste. Marie as part of World War I. The city's mayor, Louis St-Pierre, lobbied hard for the fort to be used during the war and succeeded in getting it moved from its original location on the waterfront to central business district. The fort played an important role in defences against German aggression during World War I and also provided unemployment relief to civilians living near the fort after hostilities ended. After World War II ended, the army left Sault Ste. Marie but continued to maintain a presence through various activities including hosting international flags flown at local high schools; providing security for community events; and conducting cultural programs such as art exhibits and music festivals. In 1995, when Michigan dissolved its state government under Governor John Engler, the army became an integral part of that process by being placed withinthe newly created Department of Military Affairs within thenew state government headed by Lt.-Governor Don Wirths In 2006, following a referendum vote by citizens of Michigan over whether or not to keep Army garrisoning troops in their state (and costing $2 million per year), Fort Michilimackinac was sold off to private interests and closed down effectiveSeptember 1st 2006 with no planned replacement announced other than some short-term rotations of support units while more permanent housing is being built nearby at Mishawaka Barracks Municipal Complex which opened October 6th 2007
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is a small town in the US state of Michigan. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kent County and the adjacent city of Sault Ste. Marie is its largest city. The name "Sault" means "mouth" or "bridge" in French and it refers to an artificial bridge built by the United States Army during World War II over the River Huron to connect Fort Brady on Canadian soil with nearby Sault Ste. Marie (now downtown Sault Ste.Marie). The bridge continued to be used as a link between Canada and America until it was destroyed in 1967 when the Canadian Bridge Project replaced it with a new road-and-rail structure linking Toronto with Detroit and other eastern U.S.. In 1805, when Grand Trunk Railway began construction through what is now Michigan, engineers named their line for Queen Victoria's eldest daughter: Victoria Township in honour of her mother, Queen Victoria. In 1836, when settlers arrived from Ontario Company's Rush Bay colony at Mackinac Island they named their community after John Roebuck who had been president of that company and also served as governor general of Upper Canada from 1825 to 1830; he donated land for a townsite on Mackinac Island which became known as Grosse Pointe (after Prince George’s County), Michigan Territory; this territory was attached to Upper Canada in 1837 following Confederation under Conservative Prime Minister Sir John Auld’s Departmentality Act which created Ontario Province within British North America; Mackinac Island became part of Sault Ste Marie Township on February 3rd 1839 just prior to its incorporation into Whitehall Township on December 1st 1840 due largely to Stephen Mather’s efforts – prior thereto there had only been one settler living there since 1795! It should be noted that Grosse Pointe never lost its importance as an agricultural center despite continuous waves of settlement throughout much of what is now southwestern Michigan including parts of today's Indiana; Indeed during times - particularly during Wartime -AEI Steel produced more than any other company in western USA! A few years ago I went out thereabouts again...it really doesn't seem like anything has changed much since my last visit about 25 years ago .... Although some people have moved away over time it seems most everyone still lives close enough so you can get involved without too much hassle ...... although I must say I miss going out there myself

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan was founded on June 1, 1805 by the French in order to provide a route for fur traders and missionaries traveling through the area. The town quickly became an important trading center and served as the port of entry for goods traveling between Great Lakes ports and Europe. The town prospered until the late 1800s when a series of natural disasters hit Sault Ste. Marie – including a severe storm in 1886 that destroyed much of the cityscape and killed over 200 people – caused its economy to collapse. In 1924, Sault Ste. Marie was designated as a National Historic Landmark, making it one of only a few U.S. cities to be honored this way. Today, Sault Ste.Marie is an important cultural and historical center, hosting multiple museums and restaurants along with several historic districts that offer stunning views of the Detroit River or Canada’s Upper Peninsula..
Due to its location on the St. Mary's River, Sault Ste. Marie was important in early Michigan history. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Michigan was made here in 1759 by French fur traders, and the town was known as "The forks of the river." By 1803, when Michigan became a state, Sault Ste. Marie had become a significant port for goods moving up and down the St. Mary's River. In 1847, part of Sault Ste. Marie was destroyed by fire; it rebuilt much faster than most places in North America at that time thanks to donations from Great Britain and France. The town continued to grow rapidly through the 19th century until World War II halted its growth and put a halt to any new development until 1960 when Beaches opened up along the riverbanks which led to more development around Sault Ste.
