The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan began serving the community in 1916. The Auxiliary’s mission is to support law enforcement and public safety by providing a visible and tangible presence at ports of entry, customs checkpoints, and other critical sites. In addition to providing security for the community, the Auxiliary also educates local children about maritime safety and emergency preparedness techniques. In 1957, the Auxiliary was renamed the Coast Guard Service in Memory of Captain John Clements. Captain Clements was killed while serving as commanding officer of Station Detroit when his helicopter crashed during a search for survivors after an airplane crash nearby. The service name change marked the beginning of its long affiliation with Sault Ste. Marie. Today, Coast Guard Service members from across Michigan participate in operations worldwide including Search and Rescue missions; Fisheries Investigations; Coastal Defense; Weather observation; Harbor Patrol; Public Safety Maritime Services (PSMS) patrols on inland waterways; Marine Mammal Captivity Operations (MMCOPs); Search-and-rescue missions using helicopters conducted outboard or inshore off shore under conditions of extreme weather conditions – all while upholding our core values which include Duty First Before Self & others
