Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Traverse City County. The population was 8,836 at the 2010 census. Sault Ste. Marie is one of two cities in Michigan with a population over 10,000 (the other being Detroit). It is also one of two cities in Michigan with a population above 25,000 (the other being Flint). The city was founded on July 24, 1807 by French fur traders René-Robert Cavelier and Marquette as Port Huron on the Rouge River opposite present day Superior, Wisconsin. After years of neglect by both sides following the opening up of what would become Upper Canada to settlers in 1788, General James Keweenaw recommended that Sault Ste. Marie be built on an artificial island called Lachine Lake as part of his plan for developing new land east of the Mississippi River between Milwaukee and this point—a area which included all or parts of eight U.S., four Canadian provinces, and two Mexican states before it became part of the United States in 1821. The town's first settler was Étienne Brûlé who arrived from Quebec in 1792 along with his family and began construction on what would become known as "Lachine Fort". The fort served as a trading post for Native Americans who sustained themselves through hunting and fishing operations off Lachine Island; it also housed a smallpox hospital which closed in 1806 due to sanitary concerns after contracted measles killed many residents including Brûlé himself during an epidemic that year near Montreal. Lachine Rapids were built downstream from Lachine Fort to provide access toFresh water for the growing settlement while fish processing operations took place upstream at Saint John's Falls where whitefish now swim during winter months when ice forms below rapids late into summertime.—This arrangement continued until about 1870 when damming started upstream however spawning stopped because passage through rapids became too dangerous.—In 1898 Lewiston Township was established adjacent to Sault Ste. Marie with its own government; this led to increased trade around Lachine Coliseum between township governments and outside merchants including Buffalo Bayou Coffee Co Ltd (& later White Eagle Coffee) until World War I when fear grew among some citizens about unrestricted smuggling activities across their bridges into neighboring towns.—Lackwit Bridge opened November 15th 1915 allowing traffic only within township boundaries.; federal troops occupied Sault Ste. Marie intermittently throughout World War II while battle lines were drawn along the lower Great Lakes region; afterwar development saw growth towards education Berklee College Music School & Stony Brook University through joint venture announced September 10th 1945 followed by Grand Valley State Univ.(now Wayne State Univ.) September 16th 1949.—Today much still occurs within traditional Aboriginal cultural values & practices although recent efforts have focused upon market-driven transformation not simply adaptation
