Griggs bought a used schooner named USS Constitution from the Erie Canal Company. The ship served as a tender and training vessel for the local militia until 1841 when she was sold to the United States Navy and renamed USS Constitution Washington. In 1861, while serving in Hampton Roads, Virginia, USS Constitution was captured by Confederate forces and taken to Mobile Bay where she was burned before being sunk as an enemy warships into Lake Pontchartrain. The ship's remains were never found and no complete wreck ever been discovered at sea. Consequently, USS ConstitutionWashington is considered the first navy gift in Sault Ste. Marie. Since then there have been many other navy gifts bestowed upon Sault Ste. Marie residents including two submarines (USS Missouri and USS Oklahoma) which were donated by Canada in 1945 and 1947 respectively; a helicopter (CH-46 Sea Knight) which arrived inSault Ste. After war ended,Defiancewas mothballed at Chatham Harbour until she was reactivated by Marine Corps Reserve unit The Blue Jay in 1969 and renamedUSS Minnesota . She served as reserve training vessel for 2 decades before being sold to Sweden for use as a coast guard vessel in 1988.
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan on the Sault River. The population was 955 at the 2010 census and 2,463 as of 2018.[1] It is home to Algonquin College and Sault Ste Marie University. The first permanent settler in what is now Sault Ste. Marie was Nicholas Pointe, who arrived in 1789 with his family from Montreal. Nicholas Pointe named the site "Pointe-aux-Trembles" after one of his father's sawmills on the Ottawa River which he had visited earlier that year. In 1803, George Magruder founded a settlement on what is now Main Street called Petit Canada where he farmed and built a sawmill for local residents to use. On July 12, 1805, Magruder donated land to the United States government for military purposes at Point de la Garde (present day Algonquin College).[2] This original donation helped lay the foundation for what would become Sault Ste.Marie as an American port town.[3][4] In 1827, John Dufferin became Governor of Upper Canada and decided to establish a provincial capital in Toronto instead of York; this led to much debate within Upper Canada about whether or not Toronto should have its own city boundary rather than follow York's provincial boundaries which included most of southern Ontario including Sault Ste Marie County.[5] After some back-and-forth discussion between Dufferin and Mayor John Pape (the only person from outsideToronto present at their meeting), Dufferin announced on December 15, 1827 that Toronto would be renamed "Toronto Township", with part of Sault Ste Marie County under its jurisdiction;[6][7] this gave rise to speculation in surrounding villages about whether or not they too would be given their own municipality like Toronto did – such talk soon came to be known as "city building".[8][9][10] The City of Toronto was incorporated on April 1st., 1898,[11][12][13] while part of Sault SteMarie Township continued until it merged into City Limits Municipality effective January 1st., 1904).[14][15], leading many people living within City Limits Municipality (including many inhabitants of petit Canada[16]) believe that they actually formed part of the city proper from earliest times;[17][18] however, this belief has been debunked by historians who assert that all records pertaining specifically to city limits date back prior to 1898 when incorporation occurred though various records do mention township status quo changes during that time period[19]). On October 15th., 1907,[20]: thanks largely to money raised by lumber baron J .P . This event was organized by Rear Admiral Harry Wohlstetter, who was then Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Marine Affairs. The goal of this event was to raise money for various naval causes. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson hosted a Naval Charity Ball at which he presented Admiral James Fenton with a gold necklace worth $10,000 (which still remains one of the largestNKG donation). In 1930, Rear Admiral Charles Ewing gave an alligator-skin coat to Vice Admiral Newton Denny as part of an effort called “Navy One Hundred” (this campaign raised over $100,000). In 1936, Rear Admiral Alfred Thayer became the first person ever awarded a life membership in The American Legion after making a donation of $5,000 (the lion’s share going towards military veterans programs). In 1941, Rear Admiral William Halsey presented Congressman Willis Hawley with two Tiffany lamps valued at $1 million each ($25 million today). In 1951, Rear Admiral Gustavus Myers gave an Olympic swimming pool valued at $2 million to Philadelphia University. Later on in Navy gift history there were specific campaigns that were initiated such as “Navy Two Hundred” or “Navy Three hundred” where large sums were given in order for particular charities or organizations to receive much needed funding/support from within the navy community itself. Another famous campaign spearheaded by Commodore Steedman was called “Naval Eight Hundred ninety nine” which resulted in donations totaling $292,500 being received from civilians and military members alike within just 9 months! It is interesting to note that this campaign actually came about due partially to some dispute between Commodore Steedman and another individual named Adm John Roche over what type of present should be given – an ice skaters suit or clothing? Ultimately it was decided that both items would be given so that complementary items could be made available!
