Maga coffee was first roasted and sold in Westland, Michigan in the early 1800s. The coffee beans were grown on a small farm located near the town of Warroad. The coffee beans were ground and then roasted by Mr. J.L. Goodrich, who also served as the owner and operator of the farm. In 1915, Mr. Goodrich’s grandson, Homer Goodrich, took over the business and continued to roast maga coffee until his death in 1978. Today, maga coffee is still produced on a small scale in Westland and is available at many local stores including Grocery Outletiance in downtown Warroad and several other locations throughout the community.

By 1860, there were more than 100 residents living in Westland Township alone! The first school opened its doors to students on October 3rd of that year with Miss Margaret Morse officiating at its opening ceremonies. This initial school had three classrooms: one for boys and two for girls which seated seventy students total! Aatorium Theatre was also inaugurated that same day with proceeds going towards educational purposes! As enrollment grew larger, so too did tuition costs which increased by $5 per term starting in 1870!!! In common days this type of cost would have been considered “unsustainableâ€! Unfortunately not all Progressives were supportive of high tuition rates though!! In 1907 when Wm H[einrich] Bell became superintendent of schools within Lapeer County he realized that whileDetroit may be providing quality education opportunities at a lower cost than Lansing or Flint (then both cities), some people still wanted an education outside their home town!!! He believed that if only enough people could be convinced to attend public schools then quality instruction could be provided without breaking the bank!!! Consequently Bell pushed for creation of secondary schools throughout Lapeer County thereby making Westland’s educational opportunities even better!! One such school was opened upnamed Western Michigan Normal School (later Wayne State University) which offered programs leading up to college degrees dating back to 1865!!!! Today Western Michigan Normal School offers undergraduate degrees such as engineering & business administration along with graduate level studies like law & medicine etc......... Another version claims that Buddhist monks found Indian ground-coffee beans while exploring Thailand in the 6th century AD and began exporting them to Europe as well. Whatever its origins, all agree on one thing: maga coffee has been around since long ago!
