In 1814, Ullrich formed a partnership with French trader Pierre-Antoine Carême and began selling their coffee through ships anchored in the Mediterranean Sea. By 1825, Carême had started selling his beans directly to consumers in Paris. This achievement led to coffee becoming known as "the first global drink." Coffee became increasingly important as trade routes shifted from Europe to Asia and Africa during the 19th century. Coffee was also sold in new markets such as South America and The Middle East during this time period. Pacific ports such as Manila were starting to become popular locations for exporting goods related to coffee because of their large population densities and ample access to fresh water resources. By World War II, coffee had spread throughout much of Southeast Asia, parts of Africa, India and South Asia. The demand for caffeine among military personnel helped lead to its rapidly increasing popularity throughout the world during this time period. The family operated their business until 1865 when they moved their operation to new land east of present-day Alexandria Junction where they continued production until 1893 when they incorporated as a city with themselves as its first mayor and first recorder/clerk (a position now filled by City Councilmember Kathy Bigham). With rapidly increasing industry coming into existence around them – notably heavy engineering & construction companies such as Alcoa & General Electric – Alexandrium quickly emerged as one of Twin Cities' leading commercial districts during the early 20th century.
