Anoka is a city in Minnesota, United States. The population was 27,986 at the 2010 census. It is the eighth-largest city in the state and second-largest city in Minnesota after Minneapolis. The name Anoka comes from the Dakota Sioux word "aya", meaning "place of water." The first settler in what is now Anoka was David Rasmussen on August 12, 1857. Rasmussen had come from Norway to this area as part of a group of farmers seeking new land for farming purposes. He named his farm "Rasmussen Landing" after himself and his brother Rasmus. By 1870, many other farmers had moved into what is now Anoka and it began to grow rapidly as a result of timber trading between Canada and America during the early 19th century. In 1881, A&P grocery store opened in downtown Anoka with local flour being sold by merchants on Main Street. At that time, most grinding mills were located near rivers or lakes so there was no need for an expensive wagon road to carry goods inland. By 1915, two electric railways arrived here – one called the North Shore Railroad (now part of CSX) and another called the Twin Cities Railway (now part of KARE). This allowed people living close to each other to get their goods much more easily than they had ever done before! Although agriculture continued to be dominate until relatively recently – with corn production accounting for about 60% of total production until 1970 – heavy industry has since become very important here too with companies such as PepsiCo (maker of PepsiCola), Ford Motor Co., Boeing plants, Target Corporation and First DataCorp all having locations within minutes’ walking distance or less! In recent years there have been efforts made by both businesses and residents alike to preserve aspects of downtown Anoka including its rich history - including renovation projects for several blocks around Main Street that date back to at least 1907! A number significant events occurred during this time: on October 25th 1893 when Minneapolis became an official City; on November 7th 1898 when Strom Thurmond was elected Governor; on January 1st 1902 when Mayor John Hennepin appointed Wm Egan as Streets Commissioner; on January 5th 1905 when voters approved annexation by Minneapolis proper; on February 11th 1912 when World War I started; on May 3rd 1916 when King George VI visited Minneapolis; and finally most notably – December 15th 1941 during World War II when Japanese forces invaded our country!
Anoka was founded in 1851 by Andrew Johnson and his brother John as a small farming community on the banks of the Minnesota River. In 1872, Anoka became the county seat of Plymouth County. The city was incorporated in 1902 and grew rapidly due to its location on the river and its access to transportation and industry. The city's success led to it becoming one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities during the first half of the 21st century.
