Anoka is a city in Minnesota, United States. The population was 33,874 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Anoka County. The name Anoka comes from the Dakota language and means "place where there are places." The first Europeans to visit what is now Anoka County were French explorers in 1682 and 1683. They made contact with the Dakota people while on their way northward from present-day Minneapolis. In 1821, General James Kahl founded Fort Snelling on an island in Lake Superior, but it was abandoned after only a year because of hostile relations with the local Sioux people. In 1826, Pierre Dorion founded a fur trading post near present-day Minneapolis and named it Fort Snelling after his friend and mentor, Governor John Johnson of Montreal. In 1830, Hudson's Bay Company traders started trading with the Dakota people at this post. By 1840, there were over 100 traders operating out ofFort Snelling. In 1851, Spanish explorer Rafael Rivera discovered land east of present-day Minneapolis on what is now Ramsey County when he traveled downriver as part of his survey for a new route to Santa Fe via Ioway and Mankato Creek settlements. He called it San Miguel de Asunción (Saint Michael's Monastery). On July 8, 1853 – four days after President James Buchanan had recommended that Mexico cede New Mexico to America – American general Winfield Scott made an expedition up Red River valley under orders from Ulysses S Grant to explore possible routes for military conquest through Central America southward into Texas along the Rio Grande Valley (the so-called Mexican War). A contingent led by General Scott crossed Red River about three miles east ofpresent-day Anoka on July 9th; they named the place Scott's Landing after General Scott's commander (and future president) James Buchanan. One result of this expedition was that American interests increased in East Texas; Mexican interest diminished because no action was taken towards American annexation of New Mexico despite pleas from Mexican officials before and during Grant's expedition! Russian explorer Dmitry Kozelsky explored much parts of North America between 1799 and 1800 while stationed at Saint Petersburg Naval Base aboard one of Emperor Alexander II's ships HMS Dolphin; he sighted land east or northeastof modern day Duluth on November 3rd 1800 which he called Novaya Zemlya (New Russia) due to its similarity to Admiralty Land back then! This event has been incorrectly reported as being October 14th instead! After returning home Russian vessels visited Novaya Zemlya again several times thereafter but stopped off further north around 1798–1800 when they realized Canada had already acquired most or all USwest shoreline! When Kozelsky returned home his ship reached Petrograd Colony adjacentto Point St., today known as Peterhof Harbor within Russian waters - thus proving Russian exploration & claim to lands east & northeastof modern day Duluth! To this day many historians continue theorizing about this incident & whether or not Kozelsky actually landed in Novaya Zemlya...or if he simply sailed past it twice without exploring further? Some evidence suggests that both scenarios may be correct!!! One thing we know for sure however is that Novaya Zemlya greatly intrigued& excited everyone onboard HMS Dolphin including Captain Caulfield who later noted: "We never saw anything like it...It must have been some extraordinary site!" leaving us wondering just how strange (& amazing!) an unknown location called "Novaya Zemlya" really was??? In 1875, John Averill built his homestead just north of present-day Anoka on a large tract of land acquired from the Winnebago Tribe. This area became known as Eagan because it lay east of Battle Creek and south of Minneapolis. On July 1, 1896, Anoka Township was organized with a population of 513 residents when all of neighboring rawle County were combined into one township under the jurisdiction of Territorial Governor Jesse Haines. On December 12, 1907, Anoka city was incorporated with a population size exceeding 10,000 for the first time in history! The growth and progressiveness enjoyed by these small towns during this time reflects well on their people who continue to live there today - hardworking farmers and businessmen who are committed to their community and its long-term success story. Some Highlights from our Town's History: 1) Voters approved annexation by Hennepin County on November 3rd 1920; this gave us an even larger community to call home 2) First water tower erected in 1902 – an important milestone for our town 3) First library opened in 1913 - another proud accomplishment 4) WWII veteran service led to more housing being built – thank you USAAF!
