In 1974, a 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) was activated at Fort Snelling and assigned to SixthArmy Group Headquarters which later became SeventhArmyGroup Headquarters before being redesignated EighthArmyGroup Headquarters on 1 July 2006 when all army divisions were reorganized into major commands with corps sized subordinate commands known as army groups or armies within them which evolved into an integrated theater level command structure called American Forces Europe or AFRICOM by 2006. The history of the Minnesota Army National Guard begins in 1862, when the state’s volunteer militia was mobilized to help crush a rebellion by Dakota Sioux. The guardived was initially called the 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment, but on December 15, 1862 it was redesignated as the 2nd Minnesota Infantry Regiment. On November 8, 1864 the regiment was awarded a battlefield commission and designated as the 10th Brigade, 4th Division, XVI Corps under command of General George Meade. The brigade participated in several Union offensives during 1865 including Gettysburg and Vicksburg. In 1866 the brigade transferred to duty with the Regular Army and fought in that year’s Mexican-American War. From 1876 until its dissolution in 1920, the 2ndMinnesota Infantry Regiment served as part of tha State National Guard Bureau of Military Affairs.
Austin, Minnesota is a small city in the United States. It was founded in 1881 by John Fetterman and his wife Ann with the idea of creating an agricultural center for the area. The town grew rapidly and became a municipality in 1907. Austin is located on the east side of the Saint Croix River, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Minneapolis-St. Paul and 50 miles (80 km) north of Winnipeg. The population was 9,903 at the 2010 census. The name Austin comes from Spanish "Ausencia" meaning "exile". The town's first settlers were German immigrants who left Augsburg, Germany to start anew in what is now Austin. They named their new community after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna y Ayala, Governor of Texas during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Santa Anna had been captured by Mexican forces near San Antonio and was being held as a prisoner at Fort Sam Houston before he was delivered to Mexico City. In 1881, John Fetterman purchased property around what is now Austin from Major George Turnbull for $8 per acre ($214 per kilometer). He began to build a home on this land which would become one of his most successful businesses - Fetterman's Furniture & Dealers store. The store quickly became known throughoutMinnesota for its high quality furniture items and served as both a social and economic center for the surrounding rural areas until it closed its doors in 1969."
