Some of the earliest coffeehouses in Austin were The Cafe de la Rue and The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, both located on Sixth Street. In 1875, Johnnie Dodd opened the first grocery store in Austin and began selling coffee from his house. By 1904, Dodd's Coffee House had become one of the most popular local spots for Europeans to meet and chat about their favorite café drinks. In 1907, Dutchman Cornelius Dennison opened Koffie Klokken in Austin and quickly became known for his beautifulapan-fired espresso machines. Dennison was also responsible for starting the city's first ice cream parlor. In 1912, he moved his business to what is now called Second Street South between Fifth and Sixth Streets and continued to serve delicious espresso until he passed away in 1938. In 1924, Harry Kapp started The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on Seventh Street in downtown Austin as a small operation selling ground beans only. Over time, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf grew into one of the largest commercial roasters in Texas with over 100 stores across 12 counties. During World War II, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf served as a major generator of income for many families within downtown Austin by supplying local businesses with roasted beans (and sometimes milk) during wartime shortages. In 1951, Harry Kapp passed away but his son Charles took over operations at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf until Charles' death in 1984. In 1992, Stanley Nelson purchased Kapp's business from Charles' son and continued operations under the name Stanley Nelson's Roasting Company until 2003 when it merged with Peet's Incorporated making Peet's America's second largest roastery behind Starbucks Holdings Inc.). After years of continuous growth under new ownership - peaking at $2 billion dollars within seven years - Peet’s was sold to Nestle SA for $3 billion in January 2018 .
