Austin, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2010 census, the population was 508, up from 479 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is bordered by Bloomington to the west, Mankato to the north, Rochester to the east, and Stroudsburg to the south. The city was founded by Scandinavian farmers in 1851 as Austin Township on land that had been given them as an addition to Maple Grove Township in 1848. The first post office in Austin opened on October 15, 1851; it closed on December 5, 1852 because no mail reached its destination due to lack of transportation. A new post office opened on February 17, 1853 which continued operation until November 6, 1865 when it was moved to Bloomington because that city's postal service became available through contract with Austin Township. In 1860 Austin was incorporated as a village and remained so until 1889 when it became a town under state statute 925A(1). On July 1st 1898 it became a city under state statute 813A(1). On November 6th 1865 it changed its name back to Austin after becoming one of four cities consolidated into Minneapolis-St Paul through marriage agreements between those four cities and their respective towns: Apple Valley (later Brooklyn Park), Byron Heights (later Robbinsdale), Deerfield (later Farmington Hills), and Galesburg (later Eden Prairie). In 1934 Minneapolis-St Paul annexed most of Austin's eastern border making it single-city territory once again subject only to City Council jurisdiction like any other municipality within Minneapolis-StPaul boundaries.)
