The first person to live in what is now Bemidji was David Fenton, who built a log cabin on the site in 1857. In 1893, Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail bought land near present-day Bemidji and created a sawmill that still operates today. It was through their business interests that Bemidji became known as 'The City of Lakes'. When Gertrude Jorgensen married Hennepin County Sheriff Gustavus Wirth in 1916, she brought her new husband to town and gave him a house on Second Street. Over time, other members of the Jorgensen family moved into various homes in town and it eventually became home to more than 100 people. When World War II started, many of the businesses closed down due to wartime shortages but most reopened after the war ended. In 1949, when Willard and Nellie Rasmussen purchased property east of town from Gertrude Jorgensen, they opened their own grocery store called Rasmussen's Grocery & Bakery. The store continued to be operated by Willard Rasmussen until his death in 1984. At his death, Rasmussen's heirs donated all assets (except for some land) including 94 acres adjacent to present-day downtown Bemidji to the city for use as an open space park. The park has been renamed Gertrude Jorgensen Park after her late husband's wife. This story does not end there however; later that year Dale Peterson purchased Carlson Ranch which included part of downtown Bemidji along with many other sites throughout southernMinnesota including Hamline University campus located north of town; Peterson would continue operating his grocery store here until he died suddenly at age 70 years old leaving behind over 60 years' worth - one continuous gift from customers! finally ending this long running gift giving tradition!
