In 1906, Mayor John Hennepin decided to rename it after immigrants from New York City – Lithuanians, Ruthenians and Samoyedians – who had made their homes in Minneapolis since its founding in 1854 as a railroad town called Nicollet County seat (now within Bloomington). On July 1st 1907, both blocks between Second Avenue North and Third Street North were renamed Nicollet Square after then-Governor Isadore Hasenfrank’s act creating Nicollet County; these square blocks are now home to many businesses and services such as First National Bank Plaza and Target Field Southside Mallitown Shopping Centre

The town was founded in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants, and it grew quickly due to its location and access to local resources. By 1890, Brooklyn Center had a population of around 100 people. In 1915, Brooklyn Center became part of the city of Minneapolis after it was annexed by the municipality. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in the late 1920s and 1930s, when it had a population ofaround 1,500 people. However, during World War II Brooklyn Center again experienced growth as a military base (it later served as an airfield for both American and German fighters).
