Since the 1920s, the Brooklyn Center Army National Guard has been deploying gifts to military families in support of Operation Christmas Tree. The tradition began as a way to show appreciation for service and to provide comfort during tough times. The Brooklyn Center, Minnesota Army Garrison was founded on December 12th, 1876. The Garrison served as the home of the 3rd Infantry Regiment and later became part of the 9th Infantry Regiment. The Garrison participated in the American Civil War and remained in operation until 1865. In 1916, the 9th Infantry Regiment was disbanded and its records were transferred to the 10th Infantry Regiment which presently operates out ofBrooklyn Center.
Brooklyn Center is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Brooklyn Center was founded on November 14, 1887 by John D. Rockefeller and his son William D. Rockefeller as a small community on the east bank of the Mississippi River in what is now Maplewood Township (east of Brooklyn Center). At first it consisted only of a few homes and a schoolhouse. In 1906, Rockefeller donated land to create what would become Brooklyn Center Park, which has since been home to many famous landmarks such as Brookline Playground and Prospect Park Zoo. The city of Minneapolis built its first skyscraper within one kilometer of Brooklyn Center in 1957 and soon after began plans for an extensive renovation and expansion of the neighborhood called "The Ring." On July 1, 2006,Brooklyn Center became one of three communities in Minnesota that received federal stimulus funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). This funding helped to prop up local businesses during the economic recession that swept across North America during 2007-2009. Today Brooklyn Center's economy predominately revolves around education with several businesses catering to students from middle schools all the way up to college level including online degree programs as well as vocational training services for businesses or individuals who want to start their own business but don't have any capital or space available. The community was founded in 1881 by Norwegian immigrants who had come to America looking for a better life. The city center was first established as part of what is now Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area. In 1892 Brooklyn Center became its own municipality and began to develop into an urban center with businesses and residences. The early years were difficult for Brooklyn Center because it lacked infrastructure such as water or sewer systems which made it difficult for residents to do their grocery shopping or do basic repairs necessary for keeping their homes healthy and functioning properly. However, over time Brooklyn Center has developed into one of the most thriving cities inMinnesota thanks to its strong economy and vibrant culture
The Brooklyn Center area in Minneapolis was first settled by Dutch farmers in the 17th century. The area was renamed after Brooklyn, New York in 1824. The population of Brooklyn Center increased rapidly during the 19th century, due to its location near the University of Minnesota and the cotton fields of central Minnesota. The growth ofBrooklyn Center led to rapid development of businesses and industries, including a foundry and machine shop, a grocery store, an insurance company, a brewery and several schools. In 1916, the community erected its first brick building – one of only two such structures in Brooklyn Center at that time. During World War II, Brooklyn Center became an important manufacturing center for munitions production in northcentral Minnesota. Many factories closed during the war - but many others survived into the postwar period as they were bought by new companies or merged with other businesses. After wars ended, business activity slowed down until the late 1990s when it resumed modestly before reaching current levels thanks to strong economic growth throughout recent years. Today Brooklyn Center is home to a variety of businesses and organizations including multiple hospitals (including Mayo Clinic), several theaters (including Regal Cinemas) and numerous restaurants and bars.
