The Brooklyn Center Army Ammunition Plant was founded on April 17, 1916 by Captain George S. Banta as part of the Minnesota National Guard. The plant manufactured artillery shells and other munitions for the American military during World War I. After the war, the plant was sold to the United States Army and became known as theBrooklyn Center Army Ammunition Plant. In 1945, following World War II, it became known as the Brooklyn Center Arsenal for Ordnance and Munitions production. From 1948 until 1972 it was also used as an ammunition storage site for ordnance covered cars stationed at nearby Hamline University campus (now Minneapolis-St Paul). In 1973, after being decommissioned as an armaments plant, it reverted back to its original name ofthe Brooklyn Center Armory. The armory closed its doors again on October 28th of that year, but reopened on January 5th 1976 after being renovated by local contractor Leo Rossi & Associates Incorporated under new management named Leo Rossi Military Industries Corp., which remains active today as a manufacturer of firearms components and accessories.� In 1916 Captain George S Banta of MNNGLG purchased land east of Brooklyn Center from JF Cramer family in order to build an army Ammunition Plant.� The first shell made atBanta’s plant was fired on April 17th 1916 from a .50 caliber machine gun.� By 1918 there were five plants manufacturing munitions in Minnesota � three inBrooklyn Center and two at Papillion Mills.� In 1922 Major General John Moxey relieved Colonel James Loring Jr., commanding general of all American forces overseas with orders�to close all U.S Armament Plants worldwide because we could not compete with Soviet arms production.� colonel Loring recommended that these plants be closed within one year due to financial difficulties.� On July 1st 1922 Commodore David Dixon announced that Shannon Arms Corporation had been awarded a contract to produce 100% domestically made shells��This effectively ended UMC�����������Bantam Arms Co.)� As mentioned earlier Shannon Arms Corporation produced over 6 million rounds per day�� Nevertheless their assembly line stopped making caliber .50 rounds about 1950 although some still exist today among collectors
