The National Guard of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota was organized on January 1, 1907. The first national guard unit in Brooklyn Center was Company G of the 9th Infantry Regiment. The regiment had been mobilized for service in World War I and was demobilized in 1919. On July 1, 1957, the National Guard of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota changed its name to the United States Army National Guard. The unit's lineage goes back to 1907 and it is one of only a few units in the state that has its origins from World War II. In October 1997, the United States Army National Guard detachment at Brooklyn Center became part of Fort Snelling's 4-star brigade headquarters. Since then, there have been numerous changes to army units stationed at or attached to Fort Snelling; these changes have included personnel assignments (e.g., Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron), equipment (e.g., armored vehicles), missions (e.g., security patrols and training events), and mission locations (Brooklyn Center being placed within the Navy Training Region Stations command area).

On May 10, 1942, the division was redesignated as the 5th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and then on July 1, 1942 as the 9th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. The brigade combat team was redesignated again on October 1st, 1944 as the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and finally on November 1st 1945 as the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. On November 15th 1941 in Brooklyn Center MN there were a group of men from local high school who wanted to join up with army for national guard service because they felt that their country needed more soldiers. They got together and formed their own company which became known as "The Brooklyn Center National Guard" In 1942 when it became clear that World War II was going to be a long and hard struggle many people decided to enlist in the army for national guard service. Some of these men from local high schools went into military service and others joined up when they were drafted or called up for duty during war. Some of the earliest examples of the National Guard were organized in New York City on December 23, 1775. The force was composed of militia members from all over New York state. The New York Provincial Congress had ordered the formation of a national guard to protect against British aggression. In 1802, President James K. Polk created the Military Division of West Virginia to serve as a nucleus for what would become the Army Reserve under his command. On November 30, 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt authorized the arming and training of guardsmen as part of his War Measures Act (WMA). This act provided that all male citizens between 21 and 50 years old could be mustered into military service for one year or until called out by proclamation from the president or through martial law. women were not allowed to serve as soldiers in any capacity until after World War I. In 1917, Congress passed legislation authorizing use of military forces by both federal agencies and local governments throughout America during World War I (National Guard Service Act). During World War II (1939-1945), many National Guardsmen served in units such as those known as “the Big Three”: Patton’s Third Army; Eisenhower’s Ninth Army; and Bradley’s Eighth Army Corps which formed Task Force Lorimer during Operation Market Garden on September 15-20 1944 near Arnhem Holland while Allied troops were engaging Nazi Germany's Hermann Göring's Luftwaffe air forces at nearby Belsen concentration camp
