The Minnesota Air National Guard’s 174th Airlift Wing (Airmen 741) flies the Boeing E-3D Sentry airborne sciences platform that conducts scientific research and provides surveillance for air defense missions in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The Sentry has helped researchers conduct experiments on everything from climate change to human behavior, and it also doubles as a command center for air defense operations in Brooklyn Park. When the 174th Airlift Wing was activated in 1969, it was one of just a few USAF units stationed in Minnesota. The wing served as an emergency response squadron during the 1970 Minneapolis riot, and during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, it transported troops and supplies to Kuwait. In 2002, the wing became part of the 611th Airlift Squadron when it was transferred from RAF Fairford, England to MinnPost. TheSentry is used by both military and civilian scientists across many disciplines including meteorology, oceanography, geological mapping, agricultural research, nuclear engineering and more. It has been instrumental in many advances throughout its career; for example, during Hurricane Katrina’s landfall over New Orleans on August 29th 2005 – when Cloud9 Airmen scrambled to provide support with their E-3Ds – they were able to measure precipitation intensity at almost 1 kilometer per second using ground-based radar systems. Brooklyn Park was first settled in 1858 by Norwegian immigrants. It was named for Brooklyn, New York, and Parken, a hamlet in Norway. Brooklyn Park is a town in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Brooklyn Park was platted in 1885. It was named for Brooklyn, New York City. Brooklyn Park is located on the east side of the Missouri River between its mouth on the river and Buffalo Bayou. It has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The community rests on limestone hills that rise to an altitude of . The first settler in Brooklyn Park was J.D. Hutchinson who arrived there in 1881. He built a cabin near what is now the Brooklyn Elementary School and grocery store on what would later become town square. Hutchinson's son James Davenport Hutchins also settled in Brooklyn Park and helped with founding the Presbyterian church there in 1889-1890 along with his brothers John Davenport Hutchins (1857-1929), George Augustus Hutchins (1860-1948) and Hermann Magnuson (1859-1950). In 1905, when it became part of Dakota County, BrooklynPark had a population of 458 people; by 1910 it had grown to 1,569 people thanks to annexation by Minneapolis as part of that city's growth during that decade. In recent years much progress has been made within the small community including new housing developments such as Lakeshore Village which opened in 2007 adjacent to Lake Superior Regional High School; new businesses have opened up such as Hudson's Bay Company which moved from downtown Minneapolis intobrooklynpark in 2013; major league baseball teams including the Twins and Royals have all played games at nearby Target Field over time; parkland has been redeveloped into retail areas such as Brookline Village Commons which opened up next door to Macy’s department store late last year; extensive work currently ongoing includes widening streets around town center with plans for future development including light rail transit lines through town or even unification with neighboring Rochester Hills so that one large mall could be developed there while still having access to Interstate 94
