The Buffalo National Guard was activated on July 1, 1907. The first unit to be organized was the 79th Infantry Regiment. The guard was reactivated for a total of ten years and served in various capacities until it was disbanded on December 15, 1915. On October 9, 1916, the Buffalo National Guard Foundation was formed by Mayor John Ahern and General Allan Newcomb. At this time, the national guard had been activated for only six months and there were no plans for its continued existence. The foundation would grow over time and soon enough it became an important part of the city's social life. In 1947, the Buffalo National Guard Museum opened its doors to the public. It is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. The museum has collections related to both military history and militia tradition in general. Buffalo is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Hennepin County. The population was 344,721 as of 2018, making Buffalo one of the most populous cities in Minnesota. It is also the largest city in both Hennepin County and its surrounding counties. The first Europeans to visit what is now Buffalo were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1702. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette discovered a route from Montreal to Hudson Bay through present-day Buffalo on his 1609 voyage from Quebec City overland to Lake Superior. The area that would become Buffalo was part of Sault Ste Marie Township along with other villages until 1800 when it became part of Hennepin County under territorial jurisdiction; this change followed land grants made by President James Ketchum to settlers known as the First Treaty Party (1804). In 1824, when western Minnesota became territory for the United States, Buffalo was included within Dakota Territory. In 1851, following admission into the Union as a state, buffalo became a city; it had previously been only an agricultural village located near Fort Snelling on Minneapolis-Saint Paul routes leading westward into Illinois Territory (now Iowa). In 1892, after long negotiations between representatives from Minneapolis and Saint Paul over boundary changes within Hennepin County and throughout Dakota Territory resulting in no real progress being made on behalf of either side, officials elected George Braidwood as mayor over incumbent Elias Howe due to popular support for reform measures championed by Braidwood among residents at large including many farmers who felt they had not received their fair share of development opportunities despite their investment in new farming techniques during previous decades - these reforms would come to be known as "Braidwoodism". In 1911, when Hennepin County broke away from Minnesota state control and merged with neighboring Dakota Territory pursuant to an act of Congress called "An Act for the organization of Dakotas", buffalo remained within Dakota territory but lost its status as a city; it regained this status upon reincorporation into Hennepin County effective January 1st 1912 via another act passed by congress which authorized further consolidation within our then three jurisdictional counties should there not be general agreement reached between all parties concerned about future growth patterns within those areas - this agreement resulted in much more rapid development than had originally been anticipated given expectations that rural residents living east or southeast of Minneapolis/Saint Paul would continue to enjoy relative prosperity while downtown business people would experience increased competition stemming largely from developers interested primarily in developing high-density Residential neighborhoods adjacent or contiguous with downtown businesses rather than serving those same residents who resided outside those boundaries - today's equivalent phrases such as "Dakota Triangle" or "Central Business District" refer specifically to areas situated east or southeast of downtown where similar trends are observed although density levels have decreased somewhat since prior years reflecting gentrification taking place adjacent or contiguous with established industrial districts rather than serving those same residents once again albeit at increasingly higher prices
The National Guard has been a part of the United States for over one hundred years. The Guard was established on July 1, 1861 as the first military establishment in the United States. It is important to note that at its inception, the Guard consisted of only militia officers and men from eastern Massachusetts and New York City. The Militia Act of 1792 authorized federal troops to be raised to participate in domestic peacekeeping operations if called upon by state or local governments. On September 15, 1898, President James K. Polk created an independent Department of National Defense (DND) with a mandate to "provide efficient and effective military protection for the people and property of the United States." This new department was housed within DND until 1953 when it became the Department of Defense (DoD). In 2002, Congress passed several amendments to the National Security Act which designated The National Guard as a "major combatant service" within DoD. As part of this designation, The National Guard is now exempt from most Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights laws. On July 26, 1917, World War I began and soon after American participation; President Woodrow Wilson called for an all-out effort by the federal government to mobilize reserve troops for war production purposes (the Selective Service Act). On September 3rd Congress passed the Military Code which created four military districts within each state within two weeks so that militiamen could be mobilized without having to go through county commissioners or legislatures In 1918 America entered World War I again with a new president Woodrow Wilson who decided that we should use our national guard units more efficiently because they were cheap and could be used quickly where needed
