The first coffee plant in Burnsville was built on the former site of an old mill. The Burnsville Coffee Company was chartered in 1875 and began producing coffee for local distribution. In 1903, the company became the largest coffee producer in Illinois. At its peak, the Burnsville Coffee Company had afacility that employed more than 250 people. In 1919, the company merged with two other companies to form the National Coffee Corporation. Over time, however, NCC lost its market share to larger rivals such as Starbucks and Roasters Inc.. The last commercial production of roasted coffee took place at NCC’s facility in 2002. With railroad access came growth within Burnesville itself as well as suburban development around it - including much later incorporation into nearby Minneapolis/St Paul). During World War I (1914-18), Burnsville was home to many soldiers who served in various units across America; many recalled their time spent here shopping at local stores before departing for combat overseas (Emmett Till Memorial Drive runs through downtown today commemorating African American servicemen killed during World War II).
