Chanhassen is a small town in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, located on the east side of the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1858 by Danish immigrants who named it "Herning". The town's first store, opened in 1859, was operated by John J. Hering and his wife Anna. The store became an important factor in developing Chanhassen as a commercial center with its ability to provide goods and services to local residents. In 1865, the Stearns brothers began selling coffee beans from their family farm north of town. By 1870, they had achieved sufficient market share to open a second store in Chanhassen under the name "MN Coffee Company". In 1902, MN Coffee Company merged with another coffee company, the National Coffee Corporation (NBC), which controlled about 60 percent of all coffee beans sold in America at that time. At NBC's inception, Chanhassen had become one of its primary marketing hubs; it served as both company headquarters and distribution center for NBC's products throughout North America. In 1934, NBC merged with French Canadian railroad company CN Rail to form what would eventually be known as Canada Pacific Railway (CP). CP continued to operate Chanhassen as its corporate headquarters until 1974 when it moved into new facilities across Nicollet Mall from Target Center. Today, Chanhassen remains a busy commercial center with several grocery stores and restaurants existing within walking distance of each other; along with several banks/credit unions and professional services businesses such as architecture firms and law firms. Additionally, there is also an active community theater group that presents plays every summer in downtownChanhassen square near Main Street/.

Chanhassen was founded in 1868 by Swedes and Germans. It is one of the oldest communities in Hennepin County. Chanhassen had its first post office in 1869. It became a village in 1907. The community's growth came from agriculture and manufacturing; many businesses opened up during the early 20th century because of Chanhassen's location on a main highway and access to resources such as lumber, coal, potatoes, and wheat. During World War II Chanhassen served as an airfield for the U.S. Eighth Air Force; it also hosted a detachment of United States Marines during the war period until 1950 when they withdrew to Marine Corps Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma. Today, much of what once made up Chanhassen has been replaced by high-rise dwellings and shopping malls; however, some older buildings still stand within the communityscape including Stoneman Hall which was built in 1915 as a schoolhouse and now serves as headquarters for Chanhassen Unified School District #1A (also known as "The Old Lady").

The town's growth came to an end in World War II when many of its residents enlisted in the military or left for war-torn Europe. However, Chanhassen has since experienced a resurgence with new businesses popping up throughout the decade. Today, Chanhassen is home to a variety of businesses including two banks, four grocery stores, three health clinics, and several restaurants and bars.
