It is the largest city in Ramsey County by population and the second-largest city in Minnesota after Minneapolis. Cottage Grove was founded in 1851 as a small community on the western edge of what is now Bloomington. In 1862, Cottage Grove became part of St. Paul Township, and was consolidated with other townships in 1873. The first post office opened in Cottage Grove on November 12, 1871. In 1904, Pabst Brewing Company began manufacturing beer here and made it one of its main business operations until it closed its doors in 1978. Cottage Grove has had several economic expansions over time; these include synthetic rubber production during World War II and cattle farming during the 1960s and 1970s. Manufacturing businesses have also returned to the town over time, including two companies that make air conditioners and refrigerators - Lennoxville Air Cooling & Refrigeration Company (now A&H Global) from 1979 to 2003 and GEICO Automotive Parts from 1984 to 2001; however there are no current manufacturing operations within the town limits anymore due to declines in global commodity prices which have hit many cities hard such as this one especially sinceglobalization started happening about 25 years ago
