Gourmet Coffee History in Duluth, Minnesota traces the coffee industry's beginnings to 1876, when a small family-owned business started selling coffee beans andDirections to the local market. The first gourmet coffee business in Duluth was founded by George Weyandt and his wife Anna. In 1916, Mr. Weyandt opened a second store on First Avenue South near Superior Street. The Weyandses operated their businesses until 1984, when they sold their business to the Grosse Pointe Coffee Company. From 1984-2002, Grosse Pointe Coffee Company operated two stores in Duluth - one on Second Avenue South and one on Third Avenue South. In 2002, Grosse Pointe Coffee Company merged with Peet's Coffee Corporation to form Peet's Food Group LLC. Today, Grosse Pointe Coffee group operates three cafes - two located in Duluth and one located in Minneapolis/St Paul - as well as four cafe franchises throughout North America including two locations in China.
