Since the early 1800s, Marines have been deployed to support our nation's defense. In Duluth, Minnesota, Marine Corps Forces Reserve has a long history of providing servicemen and women with gifts during deployments. The tradition began in 1912 when the Duluth Armory donated a few rifles and crates of ammunition to the Marines. Gifts continued to be given until 1951 when the armory was closed down and its contents auctioned off. In 1957, Marine Barracks #1 in Duluth donated a small collection of books on military life and customs to the Marines stationed there. These books were used as barracks library items and remain one of the most valuable assets of Marine Barracks #1 today. From 1960-1966, Marine Barracks #2 in Duluth gave away monthly gift baskets filled with snacks, drinks, clothes, etc., for troops stationed at Minnehaha Air National Guard Base. This program was discontinued due to budget cuts but is still remembered by those who served there. Today, Naval Station Pier 25 in Duluth provides an excellent opportunity for Marines from all over the country to come together and purchase gifts for their friends and family members while they are deployed overseas. The Duluth Marines deployed gift history in 1916. Throughout World War I, the Duluth Marines served as a unit of the Ninth Infantry Division and fought in several wars. As a result, they collected many donations from civilians and soldiers alike. In 1916, the Duluth Marine battalion gifted 2 bicycles to the First National Bank in downtown Duluth for use by the local military forces. The bike donations continued throughout World War I and into 1922 when the marine battalion donated 4 radios to First National Bank in downtown Duluth for use by military forces stationed in rural Minnesota.

Duluth is one of four cities in Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, and its population has grown from 604 in 2000 to 1,385 as of 2015. It became a major port for iron ore and other minerals during World War II after the opening of the Duluth Harbor; it also manufactures cars, boats, appliances, clothing and other products. Duluth has been home to several Native American tribes: the Ojibwe (Chippewa), Potawatomi ( Ottawa), Chippewa Heights (Mandan) Sioux and Winnebago Sioux have all resided here since before European arrival. The first white man to set foot in what is now Duluth was Samuel Hearn who built a sawmill on the West Side of Lake Superior in 1824. At first there were only Hennepin County settlers living here but by 1840 there were over 100 people living here including many Irishmen brought over as indentured servants by Peter Krichbaum from Prussia

Duluth is the second largest city in Minnesota after Minneapolis and the fifteenth-largest city of all U.S. cities with over 100,000 residents. It is home to the University of Minnesota Duluth and five other universities and colleges, as well as numerous businesses and cultural institutions including the Duluth Art Museum, Duluth Public Library, and Duluth International Airport. The area around Duluth has been inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years; it was claimed by France in 1821 as part of their Louisiana Purchase. After being ceded to Sweden in 1857, it became part of Norway until 1908 when it reverted back to United States control under the terms of the Treaty of Stromness. In 1920, it became an incorporated town within the City of Minneapolis; however, due to its large population size and infrastructure needs (including an airport), Duluth continued to operate as its own municipality until 2003 when it merged with Minneapolis into one municipality under common government rules. The early history of Duluth can be traced back to 1795 when French fur traders established a post on Point Pelee on Georgian Bayou near present-day downtown Duluth for trade with Native American populations that lived along that body of water. In 1821, following purchase from France by United States authorities under terms of Article I Section 8(a)of the Northwest Territory Constitution,Minnesota acquired title to what are now southeastern Minnesota and most parts of central North Dakota including Point Pelee where French traders had built their posts more than two centuries earlier. During early 19th century period various attempts were made by Swedish colonists located along Hudson Bay Company's route through northeastern Manitoba/ Northwestern Ontario Land grant system seeking admission into New Sweden but no successful absorption occurred until 1800s when Swedish settlement center developed at Moose Factory River valley southwestward from present day Winnipeg via channels current known today as Deer Lake Watershed & Wabasha River Drainage Basin

The town grew rapidly because of its location on an important route between Chicago and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
