The Edina Coffee Company was founded in 1898 by Dr. George Guglielmotti and Mr. Harry Hirsch. The company became a major player in the coffee industry, thanks to its unique blend of Arabic and Italian beans. In 1969, the company merged with the Minneapolis Coffee Company to form the Twin Cities Coffee Company Limited. Today, Edina Coffee Company is one of America’s leading roaster operations, serving up some of the most unique blends of coffee on the market. Edina was once a sleepy town onthe edge of Minnesota’s largest city. But over time, its industrial roots have been replaced by an explosion in coffee production that has forced Edina into contention with other prominent roasters around the country. There is no doubt that coffee has been a part of human history for as long as humans have been able to produce it. The first mention of coffee is from the Greek historian Herodotus, who wrote in 490 BC about how the Persians drank roasted beans. Coffee was also mentioned by Aristotle in his work Onassis and coffee was even thought to be poisonous until 1795 when an Italian named Luigi Pastorin discovered that it had caffeine content. The Cafeteria Francese opened its doors in 1837 and quickly became one of the most popular spots for coffee in Italy. One of the first Starbucks cafes opened up in Seattle, Washington in 1975. Edina, Minnesota is a small town located in the heart of rural Minnesota. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Hennepin County. The name comes from an English word meaning "oodles." The town was founded in 1855 by General James Robertson and named after his wife, Edina. It officially became a town on December 12, 1872. The agricultural economy of Edina is based on raising livestock, fruits and vegetables, manufacturing goods such as detergents and agricultural implements, and providing employment for local farmers. Manufacturing businesses include two restaurants (the old Red Lobster location and a new addition called White Sands) as well as two banks (First National Bank and Chatham Savings Bank). There are also several small businesses that provide services such as home health aides, flower care services, lawn care services, printing services, accounting software products and more. Today's community is built around its rich history which began with settlers arriving in 1855 to farm land near what is now Minneapolis. Some of the first families to live in Edina were the Keetch family who came from England in 1857; they started a flour mill and raised chickens. In 1860 another group of English immigrants settled here and started a bakery. By 1870 there were over 100 people living in Edina with many coming from Ireland and Scotland. A post office was opened here in 1875 with William O'Neill appointed first postmaster. Other important residents during this time included Judge John Wampler who served on the court system for Hennepin County; merchant tailor Levi Strauss who built up one of the largest grocery chains in America; lumberjacks George Schulz & Brothers; physician Drury Fenton; banker Augustus Biddlefield; blacksmith Jesse Sipes & Sons; railroad men Gopher Mather & brothers Edward Pyle & John Madden;and teacher/physician Mrs.(Fannie) Newmark-Kuhnstedt! In 1902 Rev John Eldredge came to live here with his wife Anna Mae Healey from Illinoisan parents (John Eldredge had come to America when he was just 15 years old). They founded Niconico Missionary Baptist Church which remains one of the larger religious institutions still extant today in Edina! Reverend Eldredge played an instrumental role during their time here helping start schools throughout Hennepin County including First Congregational Presbyterian Church - now known as Eden Prairie High School - where he taught high school mathematics until his death at 95 years old! In 1907 Mary Jane Hubbard moved into town from Winona Lake Indiana following her husband's death leaving behind five children aged between 2-18 months old all under one roof! She formed “Edina United Methodist Episcopal congregation” soon afterwards serving as its first female elder until her own death at 93 years young naturalized UME member since 1962! McGwire Drugs Stores - tomorrow's Walmart - opened up shop adjacent to Eden Prairie High School shortly before World War II ended while other stores followed suit over time like Safeway before becoming anchor stores within Target later on! Today nearly all locally owned businesses are part of either Target or Walmart making Edina one big commerce center unlike any other small town I've been involved with over my career...except for maybe Two Harbors NJ which has more total retail space but also more diverse economic interests
