The service provides support to our country and it is an honor to give back. The Air Force stationed at Keesler AFB in Jackson, Mississippi gave the first gift basket to Hastings in 1951. The basket was filled with food items, such as candy bars and cigarettes, as well as medals and other military equipment. In 1958, the Air Force station donated a second basket of items, this time including clothing and shoes. In 1969, Keesler AFB gifted another basket of items- this time with computers and software products. An additional gift was also given in 1984 when Keesler AFB donated an armored personnel carrier (APC). This donation helped improve relations between the United States military and local law enforcement agencies in Hastings. In recent years, the Air Force has again given away baskets of goods to residents in Hastings. These baskets usually include clothes and appliances for individuals or small businesses. There have also been times where the air force has gifted vehicles or appliances to local organizations or schools within Hastings area. It is clear that the Air Force loves its role in providing support to our country- both through their donations trough gifting programs and their active duty presence here at Keesler AFB! It is wonderful that we can continue having these traditions here in Hastings thanks to all who contribute each year!

Hastings, Minnesota is a small town in the heart of the Great Lakes region. The population was 9,715 at the 2010 census. The Hastings post office opened in 1882 and closed in 1959. The first settler in Hastings was Nathan Beal, who arrived on horseback from Illinois on July 15, 1856. Beal built a log cabin near what is now Main Street. In 1860, Isaac McMillan bought land near Hastings and started to grow corn and wheat. By 1870, McMillan had erected a frame house on his farmstead which served as the town's first courthouse. In 1872, Hastings incorporate as a city. A grandstand was erected for the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 which drew many attendees from across Michigan and Canada; some of these visitors founded businesses such as Juglar Booty Emporium (now known as First National Bank) and Hansen's Drug Store (now known as Sears). One resident of Hastings who made an impact on early Minneapolis included Amos Kendall (1812-1884), who came to America in 1846 with his father and brother John Kendall from Ireland to found what is now downtown Minneapolis.
