The Hibbing Air Force Base was founded in 1942 as the first air force base in Minnesota. The base became an operational center for the United States Air Forces during World War II, and played a significant role in the war effort. After the war, Hibbing AFB underwent various renovations and expansions, including a new wing in 1949 that served as the nucleus of what is now known as Wright-Patterson AFB. In 1957, Hibbing AFB became home to the world’s first jet fighter squadron when it was activated as wing three of MacDill AFB, Florida. The following year saw another major expansion when runway 6/24 was added to the runway system at Hibbing AFB. With this addition, Hibbing AFB became one of only two American airports with a transcontinental airport-wide maintenance program. During the Cold War years, Hibbing AFB functioned as both an operations center and research station for NATO’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). In 1992, JPL relocated from Pasadena, California to Moffett Field on Thursday Island in San Francisco Bay; however, JPL retain access to their facilities at Hibbing AB through lease agreement with USAAF Materials Command until 2021. In 2013, proceeds from sales of military surplus material were used to fund renovation projects at HAFB’s engineering area which included creation of new office space forthe Directorate of Aerospace Technical Support (DATS) and addition of a hangar capable of housing F-15E Strike Eagle jet aircraft along with other maintenance resources needed to keep these planes running safely and efficiently. Today, Higby AFB plays an important role within local aviation by providing services such as air traffic controllers and aerial refueling support for nearby airports while also hosting multiple USAF squadrons that use its facilities for training purposes or deployments abroad.

The Hibbing Air Force Base gift history began in the early 1940s with a donation of an airplane by Colonel George A. Smith, who was then the base's commanding officer. The first postwar gift from the air force was an F-13A jet fighter aircraft, which arrived at the base in 1945. In 1949, the air force opened its own store on base and donated a hangar to it. In 1962, the air force gifted a Boeing 727 Airlift Train to Hibbing AFB. In 1978, the air force gifted a McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet fighter jet to Hibbing AFB and it became one of only two bases in Minnesota to receive this type of aircraft. In 1984, the air force gifted another Boeing 727 Airlift Train to Hibbing AFB. In 1988, after 40 years of service at Hibbing AFB,the military donated an C-5 Galaxy transport plane that became one of only six planes ever donated by United States forces to NATO member countries. The other five are: an RAF Typhoon IIa trainer jet; an Airbus A330 family transporter; Dutch Dassault Mirage 2000 fighters; and French Concorde transports.
Hibbing, Minnesota is a town in Hibbing County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Hibbing is part of the Minneapolis–St.Paul metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Hibbing was John Palliser and his family on November 15, 1858. The community began as a small log cabin settlement near present-day Snelling Avenue and Superior Street. A post office called Hibbing was established in 1871, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1908. Hibbing's early growth came from its role as an transportation hub for local farmers transporting goods to surrounding towns and markets. By the late 1800s, the town had developed into a sizeable agricultural center with more than 100 businesses including grain elevators, shingle quarries, meatpacking plants and lumberyards. In 1907, Hibbing became one of first communities within the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area when it merged with neighboring north Minneapolis to form the city of Minneapolis/St. Paul
The United States Air Force has a rich history of giving back to the community. Throughout its history, the USAF has donated millions of dollars in various forms of relief and goodwill. Gifts have ranged from simple donations such as clothing or food to more elaborate donations such as aircraft or missiles. Some of the most well-known Air Force gifts include: The first donation by the USAF was made in 1917 when it purchased an Argus machine gun from France. The gun was used by America during World War I and was later passed on to the RAF. In 1947, the USAF donated an F-86 Sabre jet fighter squadron to Yugoslavia after Yugoslavia had been helping NATO fight communism. The plane helped free Americans held captive in Cuba during Operation Neptune’s Spear. In 1984, the USAF donated a Boeing 707 flying training squadron to Egypt after that country became embroiled in a political crisis. The planes were used for military training and aerial refueling missions over Egyptian airspace until 1998 when they were retired and sent back to America for refurbishment. After 9/11, the USAF gifted two Boeing 727 airliners with full bombloads each so that they could be used as passenger carriers for humanitarian aid flights into Afghanistan and Iraq respectively. These planes also served as crash landing sites for emergency operations following 9/11. Most recently, in 2013, the USAF gifted six Lockheed Martin C-130H Hercules aircraft which were originally destined for use by Kurdish rebels fighting against ISIS militants in Syria – but ended up being used instead by US troops operating inside Syria as part of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR). This particular gift marks one of only a few occasions where Active Duty USAF members have been involved in charitable work outside their home country during wartime – another example is Operation Sweet Dreams which saw troops bestowed grants specifically money towards healthy foods for children living under ISIS rule in Mosul, Iraq

Hibbing, Minnesota is a small town in north-central Minnesota. The population was 7,852 at the 2010 census. Hibbing is one of the oldest villages in Minnesota and has been inhabited by Native Americans for at least 4,000 years. In 1854, Hibbing became part of the Dakota Territory and was named after Andrew Jackson's General David Hunter's ranch in Tennessee. The village was incorporated as a city in 1909 and lost its status as a city until it regained it on July 1, 2018. The first settler to arrive in Hibbing were Alexander McNaught and his family on February 19, 1856. McNaught had come from Boston with his father James McNaught and two brothers Charles and John. They traveled overland to what is now North Dakota before boat navigation became available on the Mississippi River around 1858. The McNaughts established their home near present day Main Street on the east side of town in 1857-58. One year later they moved to what is now Park Avenue where they built a log cabin that still stands today. It can be seen from across Main Street while driving down Park Avenue itself which means it was probably used as their homeserver from about 1860-1863 when there wasn't any other public transportation available within miles of Hibbing at that time! In 1865, three brothers named Hendrickson arrived from Illinois with their families: George (the older brother), Isaac (the middle brother) and Jacob (the youngest). They camped along the banks of the river for several weeks before moving northward upriver to what is now Red Wing Township where they set up tents near what is now Lillie Mae Arena seating 12 people for hockey games during the winter months! On May 10th 1865, these 3 brothers donated land totaling 6 acres northwest of Center Street between Lake Superior Boulevard and SilverLake Boulevard to primitively organized Mission Indian Settlement No 8 who would start farming this land called "The Gros Ventres." This area eventually became known as "Hibbing" because Of all 3 brothers only George developed some real interest or involvement with agriculture hereabouts? Construction began sometime during late 1865/early 66 by order of territorial Governor Julius Jorgensen who purchased 640 acres east of town landsrisks being offered by Pierre Dorion de la Salle aka Father Jacques Marquette himself – second largest donation ever made to UMN campus! With construction complete nearby what we know today as Healy Auditorium & McCormick Place could have possibly been residency halls back then too! Starting out life just like many others did however humble Beginnings led him right into great things being elected 5 times Governor ofMinnesota including 14 years terms consecutively From 1893 thru 1911 During which he spearheaded important infrastructure projects like building State Capitol Annex & Interurban Railway across state lines also created state highway system! This man loved his country fiercely yet he also showed much concern towards those less fortunate than himself through various philanthropic ventures spanning multiple industries such as health care., education., banking., agricultural ..... These days you can find numerous items associated with him throughout our community such as an Andrew Jackson statue located outside City Hall Plaza downtown (& free admission!), museum exhibit honoring his legacy open daily 9am-5pm , annual HIBBING FESTIVAL held every summer here featuring arts & crafts exhibitors from around world ! Finally last night I attended tonight's event celebrating 50yrs since he took office - huge success story for our little town!!!!!! So proud to see so many people coming together TO celebrate local culture & heritage etc etc !! Thankful Lord continues To provide us abundantly !! Dennis Haagenson
