Hibbing was founded in 1868 by German immigrants and is one of the oldest towns in Minnesota. It has a humid continental climate with chilly winters and hot summers. The first European settlers in Hibbing were Germans, who arrived from Hamburg, Germany in 1851. They started a small farm on the east side of the river that became known as "Grosse Hütte." In 1870, they moved to what is now the south side of town and began to build a series of homes that remain significant landmarks today. The first school opened in 1872 and it was called "Herschel's School." The name change came about because local Hiram Herschel had decided to open up his store on Main Street near where present-day First Lutheran Church stands today. Hibbing, Minnesota is a city in Hibbing County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 598 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The original inhabitants of Hibbing were the Menominee and Dakota people. The first European to visit what is now Hibbing was French fur trader Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville on July 4, 1699. He noted that he saw "a great village" (Hibbing) with "a white man's house" and called it "Nantes." In 1800, Ulysses S. Grant's father-in-law Augustus De Witt had founded the town of Hibbing on an east bank of the Mississippi River near present day Minneapolis while American Expedition under General George Washington was exploring northern Canada. On November 13, 1802, Anna Maria Pomeroy became the first white woman born in Hibbing when she gave birth to her son at home while her husband John Pomeroy was away serving as Indian agent at Fort Snelling on Lake Superior. In 1824, a group of men led by Captain David Thompson erected a trading post near present day Hibbing which served as the nucleus for what would become known as the Thompson Trading Post Company. The company operated from this post until its demise in 1862 when it became part of the International Fur Company empire following its incorporation into The NorthWest Fur Company Limited Partnership on January 1st that year . After some struggles through incorporations and failed attempts to establish itself outside ofMinnesota it eventually folded up and all assets were sold to Canadian Northern Railway in 1944 who used them to build their line from Winnipeg to Duluth which opened in 1945 .
