The Marine Corps has a rich history of deploying gifts to its troops and their families. This tradition began with the donation of a bouquet of flowers by General John J. Pershing in 1918. The Marines also donated cigars to be used as part of the Christmas gift exchange program. In 1951, marines sent a shipment of bicycles to Guam in order to help soldiers commute to their bases. In 1978, marines sent a shipment of books and reading materials to Commandant Ricardo Sanchez in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The next year, marines sent a shipment of IMAX movies as part of the Marine Corps/NTSC Movie Day program. In 1984, marines donated cans of paint and brushes as part of the Marines/Graphic Arts Program promotion. In 1990, marines donated coffee pots for use at Camp Pendleton, California’s battalion headquarters camp. From 1951 through 1987, marine commanders distributed uniforms and equipment gifts to their troops during deployments in Asia (South Korea; Japan; Okinawa). However, this is not the only time that gifts have been given out by the Marines. From 1966 through 1978, marines contributed money towards Toys for Tots programs throughout America’s military installations. Gifts have also been given out as thank you's for various services rendered by members of the Marines such as providing manpower or support during wartime operations or providing security during events like Memorial Day or Thanksgiving Day celebrations. Today's Marine deployment gift history begins with giving backpacks filled with snacks and drinks on behalf of deployed troops stationed overseas- something that has been done annually since 2002 when marine officers from Okinawa organized an event known as "Operation Neptune's Spear". That event gathered together representatives from all branches within Marine Forces Central Command (MFCOM) in Tokyo so that local commanders could receive fresh produce from Okinawan restaurants and candy from Japanese companies studying American troop morale on Okinawa while under siege from enemy forces seeking revenge for Operation Cartwheel which successfully liberated Nakagusuku District on 12 July 2002 Consequently Operation Neptune's Spear became one long celebration leading up to what is nowknown yearly as "Marine Corps/NTSC Movie Day" - an opportunity for commanding officers all over America's military installations around Easter weekend each year where they can receive new movies related either directly or indirectly theretofrom our Armed Forces! This years' festivities kicked off yesterday when MFCOM hosted its annual "Movie Night" at McCain Barracks Range where movie buffs & civilians alike were invited downrange for dinner prior to screening some top Not So Secret Hollywood Films currently playing inside Air Force One enroute home courtesyof MFCOM! Hibbing, Minnesota is a small town in the Hibbing-Moorhead, Minnesota metropolitan area. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated community in Hibbing and Mankato counties. The area now known as Hibbing was first settled by fur traders and missionaries in 1847. The town was chartered on December 12, 1867, by Act of Congress. It grew rapidly due to its location on the large Muskegon River right near the then new railroads that connected Chicago with Minneapolis and St. Paul. The heavily forested areas of Hibbing helped keep prices low for local farmers while also attracting industry such as lumbering and mining; this led to significant development over time including many homes built around a downtown core that continues to exist today. The city of Hibbing entered into partnership with Mankato in 1932; since then it has been an integral part of both cities’ economies and cultures. It is hard to believe that a Marine battalion has been deployed abroad for more than sixty years, but that is the history of the Marine Corps Expeditionary Unit (MCEU). The unit was formed in World War I as part of the American Expeditionary Force and saw service in France, Belgium, and Romania. In 1924, MCEU was redesignated as the 1st Marine Division; this designation lasted until 1971 when it was redesignated again as the 3rd Marines. The 3rd Marines have deployments throughout the world and have played significant roles in both World Wars I and II. They are also well-known for their humanitarian work on Okinawa during WWII. Since Korea War II they have served in “hot zones” such as Beirut and Fallujah. In 2003 they were awarded an honorary Medal of Honor by then President George W. Bush for their heroism during Operation Neptune’s Spear which destroyed Iraq’s main military supply lines. In recent times there has been much discussion about marines being sent back into warzone after wars end or retired from service with no clear plan to replace them. However, there is no question that marine units like those at Fort Lewis remain an essential component of America’s defense system Overseas today and will serve through all future wars without fail
