Police gift history in Hibbing, Minnesota began on July 1, 1892 when the first policeman in Hibbing was hired. The original officer was John W. Haggerty and his gift was a revolver. On November 5, 1922, the first patrol car was purchased by the city of Hibbing from Buick Motors Corporation. The car was originally blue and white with a police badge on the front fender. Since then, many different police vehicles have been purchased by the city including an L-shaped cruiser in 2001, a Ford Crown Victoria in 2003, and a gray Kia Sorento in 2006. In 2009, the department received its own command post which is now called Police Station One. This marked the first time that a law enforcement agency had its own command post within the city limits. Today, there are over 100 officers working for Hibbing Police Department and they serve everyone from everyday citizens to large events like natural disasters or protests.
