The Inver Grove Heights Air Force Base was one of the first air bases in the United States. It opened on November 17, 1941 and was constructed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The base served as a training ground for new pilots and aircrews during World War II. In 1948, the Air Force moved the main airport from Minneapolis to Inver Grove Heights. The base became an important center for USAF operations throughout North America. The wing headquarters occupied a large building on North First Street until it was decommissioned in 1993. Today, part of the old wing headquarters building is used as an office park by the military police detachment at Inver Grove Heights AFB. During its years at Inver Grove Heights AFB, the Air Force also managed two other airfields: Chanhassen AF (now Hickory Lake AF) and StoningtonAF (now Wabasha AFB). These airports were used primarily for fly-over launches of missiles destined for targets in South Korea and Japan during that conflict; however, they are no longer currently used by either branch of service. Today, Inver Grove Heights AFB remains one of America's most important military installations with over 10,000 active duty members and 700 retirees across six different branches of service including Marine Corps Aviation; Missile Defense Agency; National Guard Bureau; 52nd Wing – Tactical Airlift Command; 322nd Airlift Wing – Specialty Operations Command; 8th Airlift Squadron – Strategic Aerospace Studies Group; 445th Aerial Maintenance Squadron & 446th Aerial Repair Squadron.]

Since 2000, the 5th Airlift Wing has donated items to tsunami relief efforts after flooding devastated areas along Japan's coastlines. In 2017, they partnered with Japanese Red Cross to deliver food and water kits to earthquake survivors living in Fukushima Prefecture following the devastating quake and tsunami events there. Additionally, during 2018 they delivered disaster relief kits to people affected by hurricanes Harvey and Irma through their charitable partner AmeriCorps911

The first settlers to Inver Grove Heights arrived in 1857. The community was named for John Inver, an Englishman who had come to America that year as a fur trader. In 1909, Inver Grove Heights became part of Minneapolis and its annexation by St. Paul made Inver Grove Heights an official city. Today, Inver Grove Heights remains a vibrant community with active businesses and a strong sense of community pride. The site contains data on over 1,500 items delivered to military installations across the United States by the USAF. The Air ForceDeployedGiftHistoryProject was created as part of the USAF Military History Museum's "Gift Collection" project. This project is designed to document the history of USAF military gifts and their recipients. The project also collects information on how each item was delivered and what purposes it served. Since its inception, theAir ForceDeployedGiftHistoryProject has collected data on gifts sent to United States military installations around the world. As of September 30, 2018, this data includes information on 1,500 items. In addition to documenting gift history, this website provides a variety of resources such as an online interactive timeline and an images gallery illustrating Each item's delivery process. Inver Grove Heights is a town in southeast Minnesota, United States. The population was 6,491 at the 2010 census. The name Inver Grove Heights is derived from the local Hennepin County dialect of Swedish, "Ingerøya". The first permanent settler in Inver Grove Heights was Rasmus Nordlund, who arrived in 1854. He and his family were the first white people to live in what is now Inver Grove Heights. The town was platted in 1859 by Horace Greeley and James Wickersham. It became an incorporated city on November 3, 1890. The original downtown area of Inver Grove Heights contained only two buildings: the Methodist Episcopal Church and a schoolhouse. By 1912 there were more than sixty buildings in downtown Inver Grove Heights – thirty-six of which are still standing today. These include four churches (Methodist, Lutheran, Catholic and Baptist), twelve businesses (five grocery stores, six banks, two insurance agencies and one printing press), seventeen homes (eight frame houses, eleven brick houses and three frame structures), plus twenty-four acres (eleven hectares) of land used for agricultural purposes. Over time downtown Inver Grove Heights has become increasingly commercialized with a greater focus on shopping malls and office towers as well as residential development along Saint John's Drive between Cedar Avenue and Interstate 94/I-94W skirts its eastern border; this has led to increased traffic congestion on Eden Prairie Road around downtown during peak hours due to the large number of people using that corridor for transportation instead of travelling down Cedar Ave., which provides wider access to public transportation nearby like bus routes or bike trails that can be ridden without having to walk or take buses all the way across town). It should be noted that many small shops have closed down or moved away over time because they could not compete with larger shopping malls while also facing increasing competition from internet cafes located close by such as Starbucks coffee shops which have since taken over much of what had once been Downtown Inver Grove Heights commercial space – although some smaller businesses have managed to survive thanks to their niche markets such as flower shop Old English Nursery & Garden located just off Cedar Avenue near I-94W exit 54A) .
