Lakeville is a small town in the state of Minnesota. The population was 7,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Lakeville" is derived from a Sioux word meaning "place where people come to fish." The first settler in what is now Lakeville was George Aiken, who arrived in 1828. He named his new land after his uncle, Lakeview Township, in connection with his family's farm there. The first resident post office was established in 1853 and until 1907 it was called Galesburg. In 1916, the name of the town changed to Lakeville because of objections from nearby Galesburg over its similarity to Galesburg, Illinois. Lakeville is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 9,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The name "Lakeville" was first given to the community by General Andrew Johnson on October 6, 1858 as a present to his wife Mary Todd Lincoln for her services during the American Civil War. The town started as an agricultural village named after a small creek in what is now Fullerton Township. In 1871, the new county seat of Hennepin County was moved from Minneapolis to Lakeville and it became a municipality on December 3, 1871. On February 14, 1907, the town incorporated as a city under state law and received its own municipal budget and police force. The city annexed two other townships on May 10, 1912: Maple Grove and Ridgeway Heights. In 1973-1974, Lakeville experienced significant flooding when heavy rains caused flash flooding throughout much of easternMinnesota which affected most communities located within or bordering Diamond Lakes watershed including those in Hennepin County along with some portions of Ramsey County including Maple Grove and Ridgeway Heights On January 7th 2014; City Council passed Resolution No.(14-00) authorizing management authority for private citizens to purchase water storage tanks that would be installed adjacent to streetscape improvements near intersection of Senter Road/Lakeview Drive in order to reduce water demand through augmentation of potable water production from wells currently drilled in that area
