Marshall is a small town in southern Minnesota, about an hour and a half drive from the Twin Cities. The population was 7,365 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The first coffee beans were ground in Marshall in 1875 by Prentice Griggs and his partner Moses Levy. Coffee became popular in Marshall because it was available fresh from the local farms and shops. Today, artisan coffee is still produced in Marshall and throughout southeastern Minnesota. When prohibition began in America, many farmers took to producing alcohol instead of coffee to avoid taxes and regulations that would have prohibited them from doing so. Some of these farmers left Marshall for new opportunities after prohibition ended, but many remain here today as artisans who continue to produce quality coffee beans and products. Some notable artisans who have made their mark on the history ofartisan coffee include Prentice Griggs (the first farmer to commercially produce roasted coffee), Bob Dennison (founder of Dennison’s bakery), Don Freeman (founder of Freeman’s Coffee Roasters), Harry Smith (founder of Smith’s Coffee & Tea), Donny Naylor (owner/operator of La Colombe Bakery) and more recent arrivals such as Joe Weisenthal (co-founder/CEO of Blue Bottle Coffee).

Marshall is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located in the Iron Range region of north-central Minnesota. The population was 563 at the 2010 census. The name "Marshall" is believed to come from early settlers' use of a post office address as their mailing address, since it resembled "Marlon." Marshall is part of the Marshall County Micropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite that includes present-day Marshall was platted in 1851 by Jacob Sager and others under the name Mechanicsburg; it was renamed Marshallsville in 1857 after General James W. Marshall, who fought in the Mexican–American War and helped lead Union forces into battle at New Madrid. A post office called Marshallsville was established there on December 12, 1858, and remained open until it was discontinued on January 8, 1903. In 1881, US Nineteenth Circuit Judge David Hennepin recommended that Marshal be named for then-Secretary of War Levi Loring Morton because "the place has taken on an air of importance through its connection with him." At first they refused because they did not believe that anything would happen to the seat; but when Morton vacated his federal job after winning an election to succeed Abraham Lincoln as President, they relented and took up the suggestion. On November 1, 1886, Congress passed Public Law No. 922 which changed the name from Mechanicsburg to Marshall – effective November 3rd –one year ahead of schedule (and two days short of Election Day). After losing its post office status in 1903 due to inadequate mail service (Apostle Field had been built nearby), Marshallsville reverted back to its original name on February 15th 1907 when Washington County erected a $1 million courthouse there – one of only three county courthouses ever built west of Interstate 35W in Minnesota during this time period (the others being Maple Leaf and Mankato). In 1932 all government property within city limits were transferred from Washington County jurisdiction over individual citizens within city limits back to county jurisdiction; however this change did not go into effect until 1934 when all marshals were rehired by Washington County after discontinuing operation statewide due to budget cuts while still maintaining control over local police services outside City Limits As rural areas lost population throughout much of America during World War II (a result largely due to military enlistments across state lines), so too did Marshall's population between 1945 and 1950 before slowly increasing again through suburban migration over subsequent decades: according as 1990 census figures show just 573 people lived there total (269 males / 291 females) making it one of Minnesotas most rural communities . However recent annexations by other municipalities have resulted in an current population estimate above 600 residents making it one if not both most populous cities/towns within boundaries defined by St Paul metropolitan area

The first settler in what is now Marshall was Elias Buell, who ranched and operated a sawmill on the Dakota River in 1849. The mill closed about 1850 when violence between settlers and Sioux began to increase. In 1871, Molineux Davenport donated land to build a school for Marshall Township residents; the school opened in 1872. In 1881, the Chicago, Milwaukee & Stroudsburg Railway built a line from Saint Paul to Duluth; Marshalls became one of its stations. The town had an formal incorporation on May 1, 1886; it grew rapidly as businesspeople and farmers moved into the area from elsewhere inMinnesota and Wisconsin. By 1910, Marshall had a population of 498 people and it was still growing when World War I started in 1914; by 1918, it had increased to 605 people. During World War II (1939-1945), many aluminum smelters were located near Marshalltown; these plants produced large quantities of aluminum products which support local businesses today as aluminum production resumes after being suspended during wartime occupation with Japan
