The second known small batch coffee house in Marshall was located on Depot Road just outside of town. This house operated from about 1922-1925. In 1951, a small cafe called "The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf" opened up on Main Street in Marshall. This cafe made its own roasted beans and served customers espresso, drip coffee, and tea. In 1978, a new small batch coffee shop called "Brewing Grounds" opened up on US Highway 77 just outside of town. This shop made its own roasted beans and served customers espresso, drip coffee, and tea as well as breakfast items such as yogurt bowls or cereal bowls. In 2001, a new smallbatch coffee shop called "Coffee & Cake"opened up on US Highway 280 between Marshall and Hollandale. This store made its own roasted beans and served customers espresso, drip coffee, pastries such as cakes and cookies (including donuts), hand brewed teas (both caffeinated and decaffeinated), milk shakes (with or without added sweeteners), bagels/Bagels with cream cheese frosting (the first commercially available bagel in the state of Minnesota), crepes/French ToastCrepes (the first Crepe Machine invented in the United States!), pies/Pies & Puddings (the first pie filling ever created by an American restaurant), danishes/(DanishesWITH Cream Cheese Frosting) - all of which were cooked over an open flame!
Marshall is a town in Marshall County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 496 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Marshall County was John Armstrong in 1836. A post office called "Armstrong" was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1853, a school district named "Marshall" organized, and the present name of Marshall was given to the town by members of the school board. The first store opened in Marshall on July 1, 1865 by J.B. McNeely and his partners Wm Hargrave and Pte Ulysses Sibley. The store became an important center for local commerce until it burned down on November 6, 1909; the fire destroyed most of downtown Marshall and many other buildings including the original courthouse which still stands today as a historical landmark. In 1910, when Sherman Minton built his large cotton gin near what is now Marshallsouth Boulevard (U-2), he became one of the largest employers in town with over 100 employees; this changed when prohibition began to take hold across America. Minton's gin continued to operate until prohibition ended in 1933; during its time it generated $1 million dollars worth of revenue for Marshall Township coffers alone! Not only did Minton's business bring much economic prosperity to our small community but also helped preserve many cultural artifacts from that era like rare photographs and even an early model car!
