Monticello is a town in Polk County, Minnesota, United States. It was founded in 1872 by General James K. Polk and his wife Julia A. Grant as the townsite of Monticello on the eastern edge of what is now Polk County. The name comes from Mount Blair, which is located in the town's southern boundary. The first settler in Monticello was John Fisk who arrived there in 1872. He erected a log cabin on the site that still stands today. Other early settlers included Wm Hickey and Hiram Hunt who also built cabins near what is now Main Street in Monticello. In 1875, Jno Denton bought land north of Monticello from John Fisk and moved his family to their new farmstead which they named "Denton Heights". By 1880, all of the original settlers had departed for other places within Polk County or else died suddenly due to natural causes such as fever or exposure during the great Dakota Sioux War of 1876-1877 that left much destruction along the Dakotas' westward frontier. In 1892 when Monticello became a city it was renamed after President James K. Polk's widow Julia A. Grant with whom he had been married since 1868 while she lived at nearby Elmira, New York City; her husband would die two years later at age 38 during an illness at home in Washington D C which was caused by a bout with smallpox contracted while visiting Mexico City where he had been appointed Minister Plenipotentiary to observe its internal administration under Emperor Francisco Pérez de Ayala y Costilla; however this disease did not kill him but rather caused extensive damage to his brain and led to his eventual retirement from public life).
