In 1916, Monticello Coffee became the first grocery store in St. Paul to offer drip-brewed coffee. In 1948, they opened their second store in Minneapolis and continued to sell drip-brewed coffee until 1999 when they closed their stores both permanently and merged with Starbucks.

Monticello was founded in 1854 as a small community on the site of today's Monticello Elementary School and Congregational Church. In 1886, Monticello became a separate city when it was created from parts of Winona and Hennepin counties. In 1908, Monticello incorporated as a village and changed its name to Monticello Township in order to reflect its increasing size. The township had a population of 582 when it lost its status as a village in 1951; however, it regained that status by 1975. On July 1, 2009, the township merged with neighboring Hennepin County to form an enlarged county with a total population of almost 21 million people (U.S., Census 2010). The history of Monticello starts with the arrival of Europeans in what is now Marin County on May 25th, 1778 by American Revolution veteran Captain John Smith and his group including three women and six children under 10 years old named Sarah Morse Heitkamp (2), Captn John Smith's wife Abigail Morse Heitkamp(3), their two young daughters Hannah (7) and Polly(10) along with their father David Heitkamp(4). This event forever shaped who lives here today – some attribute this pioneer spirit to George Washington himself while others credit him with instilling into these settlers an uncompromising determination not to let Canada get away with robbery against Native Americans during his time as leader of the United States! After spending several weeks exploring what would become their new home they recommended that Congress move forward with plans for western NY but were met stiff resistance from New Englanders who saw this land as rightfully theirs! With little choice but to abandon their homes for unknown reasons they all returned home just before winter set in on October 12th after enduring one day without food or shelter! It wasn't until 1854 when farmers Jacob Kappenberg, Alfred Sauer & John Goodyear discovered rich fossil fuels reserves near present day Maple Lake that finally gave impetus for development here; accordingly $1 million was raised through subscription drives among early settlers within one year which led to construction of the first schoolhouse on December 4th by farmer Samuel Brownell.(5). That same year also saw establishment of Gopher Prairie post office which helped promote trade between central Minnesota & eastern WI much like our current post office located just across US 301! However despite this initial success there were many challenges ahead such as becoming majority white owner’s society instead oblacksmiths/ mechanics who desired more control over town services; low birth rates leading unable businesses owners (& men!) To keep up Rochester’s growing population growth each successive generation brought forth even more problems so by 1870 only 7 residents remained & 2 were still working at school 6 days/week making life difficult especially since there was no water available for crops or livestock! Finally due largely to investment banker J P Morgan’s interest he convinced local Mn legislature in 1893 to annex formal 3rd party ownership creating “Monticellolandia Incorporated” thereby allowing him complete control over everything including voting rights enjoyed by blacksmiths/ mechanics etc.; further progress could have been made had he not become ill suddenly prior to death younger brother William took over bank presidency soon after his sibling passed away leaving behind numerous unfinished projects!!! Although short lived Continued struggles ensued eeksing 1800 until finally incorporation occurred effective Dec 1896 followed by expulsion from MN state government due #redistributionofpowers!! Although struggling economically ever since ehe decline began many newcomers donated land adjoining city limits making up current day north side neighborhoods such as Eden Prairie Village & Southdale
