The North Mankato Naval Militia Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of navy deployed gift history. The museum was founded in 1984 by then-Captain Rick Gorman and current Museum President, Dr. Donny Ziegler. Navy gifts have been a part of the community for centuries and the museum has dedicated its entire existence to preserving these artifacts. North Mankato is a small town in the Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. North Mankato was founded in 1855 and incorporated as a village in 1872. The name comes from the Dakota language word "manka" meaning "place where people gather." The first settler to arrive in what is now North Mankato was John Davenport on July 14, 1855. Davenport and his family had traveled from Missouri via Illinois and Iowa Territory when they reached what is now Hennepin County on July 12th. Davenport named the new location North Mankato after his home state of Nebraska which he had recently visited. He also donated land for a school, cemetery, jail and post office which were all built within one year of each other around what would become North Mankato Village. Moses Rasmussen came to Minnesota in 1860 and started trading with natives along the Mississippi River looking for land to purchase or sell. In 1861 Rasmussen became involved with Alexander Shields who organized a group of settlers called the Second Generation Pioneers who journeyed westward into Indian Territory searching for land to settle given that no U.S laws allowed white settlers to live on Native American lands without consent from both sides - this included any Black Americans living on reservations at that time! On January 1st, 1862 Shields formed a partnership with Rasmusen known as The First Generation Pioneer Company consisting of Moses Rasmussen (owner/operator), Alexander Shields (manager), Jeremiah Sibley (founder) and Job Stevens (director). They set out from Council Bluffs, Iowa on horseback heading northeast through present day Hennepin County until they reached an Indian settlement nearpresent day Duluth where they purchased 9 acres of land from Chief Sekiikwewa for $5 per acre! This marked their first success story as not only did they secure aboriginal title but also negotiated low prices for their land due to its scarcity! This early foray into real estate made North Mankato one of the largest landowners in Minnesota having acquired over 275 acres by 1870! Each individual contributed something unique such as 3 acres lots, 10 feet wide striping instead of 100 feet wide streets typical back then so settlers could build close together; 4-6 stories high; 40’ x 60’ lots with sidewalks; water tanks inside homes; schools – 2 teacher/27 students academies – 2 block public schools – 1 private academy & 1 half-time academy The First Generation Pioneer Company continued developing subdivisions throughout Indian Territory becoming known as The Second Generation Pioneers who operated under separate management until 1865 when federal troops arrived pursuant to General Order No 535 which dissolved all indigenous settlements east of an Oregon line including those within present day Hennepin County! With military forces marching northward relentlessly towards Canada it was inevitable that some Native Americans would succumb to war fever resulting in increased violence across Indian Territories especially during 1862–1863 when Union troops burned more than 50 villages (& many crops) near Red Wing inMN following raids by local Sioux tribe members!! Although some residents chose not fight against Union troops or fleeMinnesota during this time period most decided it was too risky living alongside Anglo Americans & eventually sold their holdings back East whence they derived their livelihoods today !! By 1870 there were about 350 residents residing primarily within what are today neighborhoods north/west Of downtown Minneapolis including: Maplewood Twp., White Bear Lake Twp., Bloomington Plt., Eden Prairie Drn., Apple Valley Drn./Wynne Rd., Nicollet Ct./Apple Valley Cir., Southdale Plaza Drn./Eden Prairie Drn./Hennepin Ave.) Today there are approximately 630 residents located predominantly within these same neighborhoods making NorthMankatothe most diverse community in Hennepin County ! Some notable cultural aspects include: Vikings practicing law here since before 1000 AD (& still doing so today!) North Mankato was founded in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants. The town developed as a lumber and farm town, until the early 20th century when it became an important commercial center for the region. North Mankato was host to several major events during its history, including the first United States airshow at Midway Airport in 1955, and the annual Twin Cities International Jazz Festival.
