The North Mankato Navy Yard was founded in 1917 as the Naval Training Station. It became an active naval base with the activation of World War II on April 9, 1941. The Navy Yard operated until its closure in 1992. After closure, the Naval Training Station property was used as a housing development and then for a variety of other uses before it became a public park in 1998. In 2017, the land adjacent to the now-private North Mankato Naval Training Station Park was purchased by the city of North Mankato and is being leased to the Minnesota State University at Mankato for use as a research and cultural center. Mankato, Minnesota (formerly North Mankato) is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 30,815 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. It is also the most populous city on Lake Superior and one of its eight cities on the St. Louis River watershed. The city was founded by Dutch farmers in 1851 as a small trading post on anual trade route from Superior to Duluth and back. In 1862, David Kapp organized Dakota Territory's first election, which gave him power to choose delegates to attend Congress for that territory; he chose Mankato as its delegate to Washington Territory's congressional committee charged with creating rules for territorial elections there. In 1871, Kapp became Territorial Governor of Dakota Territory after his appointment by President US Grant; he appointed his son John Kapp as Territorial Auditor General and Mayor of Mankato; both men were later elected into office as United States Senators from Minnesota during Reconstruction Era times when Northern Minnesota saw increased Republican Party control over government there following the American Civil War (the party lost control of all but two northern states during that time).
